Can someone give me some idea how big of a Camshaft you can put in a 302 with stock rods and flattop Pistons with 83 Mustang GT heads? I know the correct way to do that is to clay the pistons,But I have nothing together right now... I'm trying to get a idea.

Likely best to call a cam shaft manufacturer. I had a Crane Fireball with 222* duration and .498 lift in my 289 but I had KB116 pistons in it. I would guess it would work fine though, if you have enough compression.

I have a 289 with stock bottom end and KB116 dome pistons. My heads were shaved .030 and have 1.94/1.6 valves and a solid lift cam with .536 lift and had no clearence issues at all.

bigger isnt't always better, a big cam in a stock motor usually is slower than a stock or smaller cam if the only change is the cam, if you just add a big cam and dont improve intake, heads ,exhaust your wasting your time. A small cam change (like a performer type) can add some power maybe 15-25hp with stock components. Dont look for big gains unless you have upgraded int/ex as well.

Excellent advice!

Case in point...my '65 289 225 hp. Falcon had a pretty lumpy Crane cam when I bought it.

The guy I purchased it from didn't remember the specs...but it is TOO big.
With the stock heads, dual exhausts and no headers, stock converter, Edelbrock Performer manifold, Edelbrock 600 carb, and only 3:25 rear gears, it is a real dog off the line...and doesn't start coming on strong until around 2,000 rpm's. It sounds REAL MEAN at idle though.
The car would have been a LOT better off with a smaller cam the way it was set up initially.

I am now in the process of installing 3:70's in the rear (since I already had them laying around), and saving up $$ for headers and a converter, and do some head work down the line. OR, I could just take out the cam and replace it with a smaller one!

GUNROCKER...Not christang!!!

in my humble opinion, about .500 lift will be all that you need. anything bigger than that will hurt you. remember that an engine is only an air pump. there aint no use in putting the air (fuel mixture) in if the engine cant pass it through!!
