I am already replacing my center section, as I want traction-loc and some new gears. And right now I think that I have a bent left axle, as I am getting some noise back in that region- (kinda like a whomp-whomp with each turn of the wheel)- or at least my mechanic and I think it is a bent axle. And right now they are 28 spline axles. Well if I have to replace an axle anyways than I figure why not uprgrade to 31 spline axles. Is doing this as simple as getting an appropriately matched 31 spline center section, to fit the 31 spline axles or is there something else I have to do? And what kind of horsepower can 28 spline axles take anyway (if I decide to keep 28 spline axles)- I only plan on at most 400 horespower up front in the future, is this a task for the 31 splines or can 28 handle this? Sorry lot of questions, thanks

Paul,
It depends on the level of traction and how hard you hit the drivetrain....

If you have 400HP but run 6" wide street tires, you'll never need to worry about your axles, 'cause the tires will be the "weak link" in your 'traction action'.

However, if you plan on running slicks, a trans-brake, or switching to a manual trans; then I'd be concerned about the 28-spline axles.

If your new traction-lok differential is a 31-spline, and the axle lengths are correct, then the only change you should need to make would be to get properly-sized (for 31-spline) axle bearings and seals.

Paul sounds like an axle or front bearing to me.
If they never have been replaced when you change gears have new axle bearing put on too.

Scoop the bearings were repacked about a year ago, but then again they still could be the problem. Won't know until I look there a little more closely.
Thanks Ryan I'm still thinking about the 31 splines, while I have a little more meat out back than 6 inches, I am still in question of whether I'd buy a set of slicks for the occasional visit to the track. (definitely no transbrake though) Basically though I just would want something to endure some harsh street use and an occasional visit to the track. If one of my current axles is bent, I may opt for a 31 spline unit just for added security. But that is encouraging that it is not too difficult to go to 31 spline once if the differential is a 31 spline unit.

As far as the whomp-whomp sound, anyone else have any experience with this kind of noise? I think it may either be a bent axle or a bad bearing like Scoop said- it does get real obnoxious especially on the highway
