The harmonic balancer on the mustang does not have any markings- so how can I determine the timing? Should I buy a guage that you could stick on there, or is there another way to determine timing? I'm new at this so any info about how to determine ignition timing using a timing light would be helpfull.

Paul is it an orginal balancer?
You can put the balancer at TDC.Then go buy some timing tape it will have the numbers on it.

Alright Scoop, thanks alot. It is the original balancer, I'll go get some timing tape. I'm trying to get that pertronix ignition installed and I want to make sure I can check my timing before I start.

Paul the balancer should have numbers on it.Did you look all the way around the balancer?
Did you follow the directions on the pertronix unit?

Okay Scoop, I loooked under the car extremely close at the Balancer this time and I could see timing marks barely still visible. They are sooo fine and worn that I will have to remark them. (some chalk lines should do for now) Will these still be correct in relation to the engine after all this time? And as far as the pertronix unit, I have read the directions several times, but have not installed it yet as I want to make sure I am capable of checking timing before I start. Thanks,

Paul

Uh, no, how would I do this? Sorry, this is my first time doing any of this so I'm just learning as I go.

Remove the number one plug, which is the plug on the front passenger side of the motor.
Leave the key out of the ignition so there no way it can start.
Put a socket on the balancer bolt and place your thumb over the number one spark plug hole.Dont stick your thumb inside the hole just cover it.Turn the motor over the socket wrench.Keeping turning until it you feel force coming out of the number one plug hole.It may even force your thumb away.
Check to see if the balancer is on 0 or TDC mark. And check to see if the rotor is pointing at number also.

I hope some of that makes sense.

Paul,
My 68 was the same way, the marks are barely visible. I used some whiteout stuff to make them show up with a strobe light.
The balancer shouldnt slip over time but it has been known for that to happen so checking the way Scoop suggests is a good idea. I didnt check mine - just assumed it was good and it appears fine.

By the way I noticed on a post you made some time ago that plan on attending Purdue this year, when you get here let me know, Im also in Lafayette. I also have pertronix and some spare ignition stuff (most of which will fit the 351W) so if you havent got it nailed by then you can drop me a line and I will be happy to come over and take a look. That is assuming you plan on bringing the car to college with you.
*warning sexist comment*
I highly recommend you take your car to college if you want lots of attention from the ladies. Anyway thats all up to you. lafayette does have a good crowd for cruises and shows in the summer but its quiet in winter. Next weekend is the BIG ONE, the whole downtown is closed for a huge cruise in and show. Food, Bands, Beer, Burnouts and a decent crowd. Come over if you can its quite a good time. Write me if you want more info

Anyway sounds like Scoop's got you covered.

Scoop, thanks for all the quick help- I finally got it all in and it runs beautifully. I notice a difference when the car is floored, and the revs really get up- it pulls harder an you can hear a much more defined sound from the motor- rather than just a mish-mosh of loud noise at the high revs. I had a little trouble getting to the balancer (no room for tools or even hands to get in there) to turn the engine over manually. Eventually from under the car I was able to get it going and was able to roughly determine that it was still lined up from a faint push of air from the #1 cylinder (I wasn't cranking nearly hard enough so couldn't get a strong push of air). After installation of the Pertronix I checked timing again and it had not changed one bit- but better to be safe and to have checked that stuff before then to worry about it later. Pertronix was extremely easy to put in, only hard part was the new coil going in- got a little scratched with a small dent too- almost impossible to get back into original clamp. Anyways thanks again for the help

Indy, unfortunately freshman at Purdue do not get school parking so I don't think I'll be able to bring it down. But maybe I'll figure out something- it would be fun to have down there (at least while its still nice weather) rather than have it sit here in my garage all year. Thats really exciting that there are some decent cruises down there- I'll probably be in contact with you for more info later on cause I definitely want to know more about that stuff. Thanks,

Paul
