When we moved the battery to the trunk we used the 2 guage wire that came with the kit (I know, not big enough). We are now going to switch to 0 guage, but need help on how is the best way to get the terminals to fasten the terminals to the cable. We had problems with the 2 guage and I know we will have the same problems with the bigger wire.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

I went to NAPA got their terminals, and they put them on my cable for free. They have a really wire crimper.
Or I have used vise before I took some pipe big enough for the terminal to fit.Cut the pipe in half lenght ways.Put one piece of the pipe on either side of the terminal and clamped it in the vise.It was a lot more easy just driving to NAPA.

Propane torch and some solder....along with a short piece of heat shrink tubing. I used a couple soldered on terminals to shorten the battery cable and the Moroso ends for the long run of cable from the solenoid to the starter. #2 is probably okay for the cable.

Or use MOROSO ends

I use this to feed thru the trunk floor...

And used these to attach cable to starter, the feed thru and the solenoid...

or you could use one of these on the battery side

We have 2 guage on it now and it drags occasionally. Need to go to 0 guage. I will probably see if the local NAPAs will put the ends on if I buy their terminals. If not I may try the Moroso terminals. Can I get them from Summit in 0 guage?

Thanks for the info.

I've always used welding cable and gotten the matching terminals from the welding supply shop and soldered them on.

Me too! I have the sh!tty summit battery relocation kit on my other project that my son did years ago and it won't supply enough current to crank a 10-1 440. The 0 gauge welding cable on Melissa's 406W 13-1 compression motor is fine though.

The welding supply house where I am buying the cable said their terminals have 1/2 holes and I thought that might be too big. I might try them anyway.

Thanks.

The upside to the welding cables is they are cheaper than battery cable, funny isnt't it. You can get all the parts you need to do a top quality battery move at McMaster Carr. A fantastic company to deal with in all respects.

http://www.mcmaster.com/

They have a selection of cable, terminals, hold downs, trays, heat shrinks, etc.

Go to:

You can order cable and terminals from them and also order a terminal crimp tool that does a magnificent job. The tool has a heavy duty frame that holds the terminal and you smack it with a hammer to make the crimp. The best $15 you will ever spend. Make sure you use the right size terminal for the cable you are using and put a piece of shrink tube over the finished assembly and it will look like it was professionally assembled.

If you have properly assembled terminals on welding cable then a #2 from a trunk battery to the starter solenoid is more than adequate. That cable will easily handle the current with no noticeable voltage drop. If the terminals are not properly mated to the cable, the resistance of the connection is enough to make the whole cable seem to be inadequate. Crank your engine over with the coil wire disconnected for 10 seconds or so and then feel the cable terminals. If they are anything other than very slightly warm, there is your problem.

We pulled the cable and will try new terminals first before going to a heavier guage wire. We had trouble getting them to stay on the first time we tried to hook them up. Scoop said his local NAPA helped him and we are going to try the same. If it does not work, we will order the stuff from the place you suggested.

Thanks.

You can also try going to your local car audio store. Or even Circuit City if you have one. They usually carry 0 gauge battery terminals with allen head set screws.
