I recently had knee surgery on my left knee, the doctor said that in a couple of years I will probably have to get it replaced. I think my clutching days are numbered. So now I'm looking for suggestions. My car is a 65 coupe with a 347 and a 5 speed now. I'm thinking about a Art Carr AOD with manual valve body to eliminate the TV cable. The Over drive is a must, I like to drive long distances. It is a 80% driver 20% track low 12 sec car. Anyone have any suggestions.

I don't know about the AOD Mike, clueless, sounds good though. Glad your OK. I have a cool shifter handle you can have for it though if you go with a stock type auto shifter. It's a wood grain Shelby T handle w button, with a snake/cobra on it. Your welcome to it if you want it. It needs a good home.

The aod will slow your car a little, but the streetability will be good. Just get the right converter and you'll be in good shape. Maybe a call to Jim Pauquet is in order, JPT transmissions is a good source.

Mike have you looked at http://www.lentechautomatics.com/ AOD yet.I think the AOD would work great, and eliminating TV cable would be even better.
Sorry to hear about your knee Mike.

Jerry if no one else speaks up let me know.

NO... Mike! wait until the wooden peg has proven futile at clutching before defiling your car like that. I've met guys with artificial legs that drive stick cars so don't rule it out.

Mike, sorry about the knee.
Did your doctor tell you to go auto??
The reason I ask, my doctor told me I would never walk without a cane, and would need a replacement. (left knee) He was amazed after a year I had 3/4 of the mobility and walked without a cane. Seems like in the last 2 years, the clutch has helped me gain some strength in my leg. Now it did take almost a year to have enough strength to push the pedal.

My knee injuries were severe, dirt bike, high speed, high sided and my left leg was an accordian, femur went through the knee and split the plateau of the lower leg (think wood splitter). I now sport 8 screws, a 4 inch plate and some wire, airport screeners go crazy.

My point is, the doctors don't know @#it. If pushing the pedal is what you want, you'll have to work for it.

Good luck.

YEAH, WHAT STUART SAID!

Mike, Don't just roll over to the dark side of a slushbox! Consider jamming gears as another form of physical therapy (PT) to keep your knee flexiblity at it's peak....Don't give up on the 3rd pedal before you have to!! Convince the doctor to write off the price of a new pressure plate & clutch disc as PT medical devices! A friend of mine got both of his knees replaced and he says he wishes he'd of done it years earlier! Heck, he walks better than me now!

I believe your knee bothers you and likely will until your operation and may even a bit afterwards - regardless if you keep your 3rd pedal or not. But everytime you jam that 3rd pedal & slam that shifter @ 6K+ rpms, grit your teeth & tell yourself you're just doing it YOUR WAY -- an' to HE!! with Dr. Killdare!!

REMEMBER:
It's better to wear out than rust out!

LONG LIVE THE STICK!
Good Luck!
Ryan

Stuart,

Don't be so hard on the doc's, they know enough for you to be walking. It is not like you were going to fix it with a welder or duct tape.

Thanks for the pep talks, I haven't totally made to decision to cross over to the dark side yet. I'm just planning ahead for the worst case. Can't bend the knee yet.

I had looked at the Lentechs earlier, a friend of mine with a 10 sec 5.0 has went through two of them, Lentech fixed them both times. I will check out JPT, a C-4 with od, I wonder if the od unit is separate like the Gear venders unit?

"Let the force [of the stick] be with you", Mike!

Mike,
I too have had knee surgery, though not as major as what you had. ANYWAY - what I determined was, DO NOT SLACK OFF ON THE PHYSICAL THERAPY -- Not even ONE day! The first 6 weeks after your surgery will determine just how much flexibility and strength you'll have the rest of your life!

Push yourself,
Be better than you were,
Surprise the Doctors.........

Good Luck!

Really, I had a great doc, he "fixed" me the first time I crashed (shoulder, 6 ribs and wrist)and I requested him for the knee repair 6 years after the first one. My last visit he told me he was shocked I did so well. He even joked about how many payments all the dirt bike riders were paying on his new Lotus, then he took me for a ride in it, cool car but way out of my budget.
