Not sure about all the fan relay/switch kits but the Painless Fan Switch kit comes with a temperature 'switch' you screw into the water jacket of the intake manifold. At a preset temperature, the 'switch' grounds the negative side of the relay there by energizing it and sending 12volts to the fan(s). Once the temperature falls below a certain setting, it 'un-grounds' the relay turning the fans off. The temp at which it actuates is around 170*, probably around the same temp is turns off.

And no, you don't need a seperate or master switch for the fans, but you do need to fuse the 12volts that is supplied to the fans via the relay. The Painless kit also comes with a circuit breaker but I still like to fuse the connection also.

On edit....

No, you don't have to have a master switch, you can hook the fan(s) up to run all the time when you start the car. But, it is still advisable to use a relay and not the 12volts form the ignition switch to operate the fan(s) but a seperate fused source for the fan(s).

The great thing about the relay and temperature 'switch', you don't forget to turn the fan(s) on or forget to shut off the fan(s)

I would use both temp switch and a manual over ride switch.
The manual switch comes in handy sitting in the stagging lanes.

Ron,

The master switch would be beneficial if you were running an electric water pump also with the engine shut off in the staging lanes.

Otherwise, in my humble opinion, with the engine running and turning the water pump via the crank pulley, you aren't going to cool it below the normal idling temperature with a master switch operating the fan(s).

Your right about that, but I was more talking about running the fan with the motor off.It helps to cool the rad and also blows air past the carb and fuel lines too.
