I've got my summer job, and pay checks are finally rolling in. And of course, these checks are going to the stang. The problem is, I can't do everything that could be done, so I need to choose the best thing to do. I could get a cam, along with lifters and springs. I could also change my rear differential. Or, I could get nitrous. This car is a weekend car. I just want to be faster without sacrificing too much of anything: gas mileage, top speed, engine longevity... I know you gotta give and get a little. What do you suggest I do?

Least you all forget..Before you make it fast make it stop..Work on getting the brakes done to your liking first then you can go from there..if it goes 0-60 in 2.5 seconds but wont stop! whats the point? Bruce

Gears would be great , BUT you'll give up some top end and gas mileage. Nitrous might be better for your car IF you don't over do it. I am by NO MEANS a Nitrous expert or even a spurt for that matter. I'd probably get the gears but that's just me.

It depends on what gears you have, what gears you go to, and how much hp you're running as to whether you're losing topend or not. If deeper gears help you pull high gear better, you'll actually gain topend. As for gas mileage, going from 3.00 to 4.11 is certainly going to hurt, but a mild step up may again help around town since the engine doesn't have to work as hard assuming you keep your foot out of it. But yeah, you're likely going to lose a little topend and gas mileage, but you won't miss either - promise!

Better intake, like a Weiand Xcellerator, cam if you don?t have one, and gears.

I have 2.79s, and I was thinking about 3.25s or 3.55s. All my specs are in the signature. What do you think my top speed will be after the gear change? What about comfortable cruising speed(without being droned out by engine rpms/noise)? And how much will it really change acceleration? numbers

What's your rear tire size? What's your engine redline? Top speed is a moot point because you don't have the power to reach redline in high gear with either ratio.

i wouldnt be concerned with top speed. the only speed you should be concerned with is trap speed. where else do you plan on going over 100 miles an hour?? now assuming you have a tire diameter of 26" you are cruising the highway at 70 mph with 2.79:1 gears, thats 2500 rpms. if you were to take a run down the track and cross the lines at 100 mph you would be taching 3600 rpm. if you decide to step up to 3.25:1 gears you will be cruising 70 mph at 2900 rpms and crossing the traps at 4200 rpm/100 mph. 3.55:1 gears will get you 3200 rpm cruiseing at 70 mph and crossing the traps at 4600 rpms/100 mph. i think 3.25:1 or 3.55:1 gears will suit you fine for what you want.

I'd go to at least a 3.55 gear.It will not be to much for the street.

My rear tire size is 215/75/14. I think thats around 26" tall. My redline is a little before 5000 i think (my specs are in the signature, tell me what you think the redline is). And right now, I've had the car up to about 125 with a little left to go.

As james306 said, with 3.55s, you'd still only be at 4600rpms at 100mph. Sustaining speeds like that on 60s suspension mustangs (not to mention public roads) is downright stupid if not suicidal. I've had my car up way faster, so I'm not trying to lecture you. Believe me - you don't want to be going any faster than that anyway. It's scary!

Based on what you said that this is your 'weekend car', I'd vote for GEARS for sure!

Yeah, 3.55 gears would be better, but....for a "play car", I'd go more... I'd go 4.11s.

I'd guess you have an open differential. So while you're inside the pumpkin, locate a limited slip differential and bolt the 4.11 to it while your at it. You won't regret it!!

......then you'll be looking for newer rear tires!
