Help me out guys.I just bought a new set of Taylor 8mm plug wires and looms and I'm custom fitting them to the engine.I was going to switch to the newer style cap with the posts rather than the old style 60s cap as I've heard with the bigger distance between posts on the newer style cap that there is less chance for misfiring. The trouble is my air cleaner hits on one of the posts.Turning the distributor only makes it worse. Also I prefer the look of the old style cap on my "classic".Is there really much improvement to be had using the new style cap, or will I notice any difference up to around 6000 rpms?I'm running a pertronix ignition and the big Accel yellow coil.------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html

The larger cap style was designed for the higher voltage of the TFI system. As long as you are using a good quality cap and rotor, you should have no internal cross-fire problems.

I run a pertronix ignitor II. I noticed a big difference when i swapped from the small cap to the big one. I could see the cross fire on my small cap with the strobe light it was making my idle rough. The big cap is the way to go for performance but its up to you. If you dont see any cross firing with the strobe light then I wouldnt bother. I have the cheapo Mr gasket air filter (14 inch open element - chrome) and it fits with that. I also went to 9mm wires at the same time, I guess the crossfire could have been in my 6 month old 7mm wires instead? ------------------ '68 coupe 289 C code 66 heads, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust

A 14" air cleaner is only 14" for a reason... that's stock C-H-E-V-Y. Tho not common, a smaller Ford Hi-Po size fits nicer. The cap isn't a real big deal, if you can fit it, fine, if not it won't cost any power.

Ford Motorsport sells a 13" chrome open element air cleaner assembly that clears the larger dist.cap just fine. On my race car I used to use the smaller, early style cap, never had a problem.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker 302 5speed. soon to be under the index! 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

Thanks guys.I think I will just stick with the small style.$150 bucks for wires and looms, got to buy new heater hoses because they're too short and interfere with the looms, new cap and rotor $30 bucks.I really don't want to spend another $75 or so to get a new air cleaner as well. This was just supposed to be a simple wire swap. ------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html

I run the 13" chrome Ford air cleaner that Rory was referring to. It clears my large MSD dist. cap and costed about $35.
