Hows it going fellas i was wondering if anyone was using an airpan with a 65-66 shelby type scoop. The scoop is kinda small so i was wondering if it woould be worth putting an airpan under it . Right now im running a small 289 but have a sweet 331 waiting for transplant ya think that little scoop will flow enough air to feed a 600 hp 331?

Cool board btw ...

WELCOME TO M&M, DYNORAM!!

I don't have direct experience with your proposed setup; however, I'd suggest you try it and see what, if any, difference it makes with your combo.

To keep costs down, instead of buying an airpan(like what MOROSO sells) just to test with, you can fab one - strip down an old OE air cleaner base and secure some foam (such as water pipe foam insulation & duct tape) around the lip allowing it to to extend up 1-2" so as to form an air seal to the underside of your hood around the scoop opening. It won't be pretty, but it'll be functional to allow you to determine if you want to invest in a prettier airpan!

Just my 2 cents,,, Good Luck!!

Ryan

P.S.

Welcome to Mustangs and More,I like Ryan's suggestion.Nothing wrong with trying it out the cheap way first.
I think that little tiny scoop will be better then no scoop at all.
Now a bigger scoop will get more air cold(=power) to the carb. But it will also cause more drag.

Ive seen pictures of people using aluminum turkey roasting pans instead of the air pans. Im sure you can make something just for testing purposes. I also agree with scoop anything is better than nothing, im sure even the smaller shelby scoop is worthwhile.

Ron, You would probaby want something a little more substantial than a toss away turkey pan. That big scoop is probably drawing more air than the engine is injesting. I would think the resulting pressure will distort the sides and bottom to where after a few short 95-100 mph. blasts, it would be all mangled up. It may even get fouled up in the throttle linkage at WOT. (not good) With a smaller scoop it may survive a little longer.

Don't get me wrong, It's pretty good logic for a test platform to see if a difference is felt in the ass-o-meter or a template for a more permanent rig. IMHO

I went back and looked at Mustangboy's rig and I see there is a cooky sheet under the pan to stiffen up the bottom. Did you see that, Ron? It still doesn't address blowing out the sides.
