Is there a way to test a coil to see if it's bad or not.I put an Ohm meter to it and it has 11.08 reading ?
I changed my power valve today. To try and get rid of the surging I was having. It did not help. The surging in not only idle any more it's anytime I'm just cruising or lite acceleration. So I put an old coil in the car.And it seemed to help for now.I only drove it a short time.I'll try it more this week.

If I need a new coil whats the best one I can use with my ignitorII unit.I need one that takes a full 12volts because I dont any resistor any more.

Also how does heat affect a coil.
I have my coil bolted to the head.Is it getting to hot?

Hi, new guy here, been lurking a bit, but thought I would ask a question of you.

If you say you need a coil which takes 12v and not reduced, did you bypass the (I think) pink resistor wire inside the car? If not, then you may not be getting a full 12v to the coil.

Scoop,
I think coils should have about 1.5 Ohms across the primary terminals. Any more may indicate a problem but then Im talking about a stock type coil. I have an ignitor II in the car (as of last night) but im running a stock coil at the moment it fine that way. Pertrnix do make a coil specifically for the ignitor 2 I think they have a lower impedance, and are not suitable for the ignitor I or points. I think its called the flame thrower II coil.

I have heard of failed coils causing surging so I would the coil was the problem.

Phil the coil I just took out is the flame thrower II.And it's just past it's warrenty.
I have not been real happy with the pertronix stuff yet.If it turns out to be the coil then I don't know which kind to get this time?

Tbird yes I bypassed the pink wire.To get a full 12volts to the coil.

Scoop I dont know your finacial situation but if you can afford it go with an Msd and be done with it! I use an msd and it will wake up your motor.. But the down side is expense.. You can buy the ready to run units that just require a coil or the billet ones that require an MSD ignition box.I have the msd digital 6 plus.. But i forked out $600 bones so my suggestion is at least run a duraspark ignition and sell that P.O.S.. you might also check on ebay..Some have great sales on the whole setup even the dist..

RON,

I will agree with Bruce on this one, as you know I just got rid of my pertronix unit and coil and installed the MSD ready to run pro-billet and MSD blaster-2 coil. It really made a huge difference in my motor. I do have a brand new ignitor coil ( 1.5 Ohms ) with about 15 miles on it if you are interested. Email me if you are and you can have it for cheap + shipping.

I talked to Alex today. He gave a few things to check out and change before I go and do anything else.I did something kinda half a$$ed that might be the cause of all this.
I tell you all about it if it solves the problem.
Thanks again for your time Alex.

Bruce I can't go spending the money on a MSD system right now.
With a family the money is alwasy flowing OUT.

John thanks if it turns out I need a new one I'll let you know. How much was the ready to run MSD unit, and can you use their boxes with that dist?

PS John the check is in the mail thanks.

SCOOP, it wouldn't hurt to just call pertronix and ask them if they will warranty it. I had a flame thrower 2 coil to match my ignitor 2. I drove it about 1,000 miles and parked it over the winter. Oil started comming out of the top of the coil, within a couple of weeks of getting the car back out, it was way out of warranty and they still warrantied it. Give them a call.
