I have not had the valve covers off of the 65 since I installed the 289 about 2700 miles ago. I am going to pull them this week but have now gotten confused because two people have given me conflicting ways of doing the lifters. I was told to tighten down until there is no vertical play on the push-rods but there is enough play to spin the push-rods 360 degrees by hand. I was also told to tighten down until there is no vertical play in the push-rods and you can not spin the push-rods by hand. Now I am confused and don,t know what to do. I was just going to cut holes in an old pair od valve covers and set them while the car is running, back them off until they start to rattle a bit then tighten them down until they are quite. What is the proper way to do this so I don,t make a mess of things? I am getting a little bit of noise from the valve covers not much at all but enough that I think I should pull the covers and do this. Do a search on this subject. From the info I found here on the site, I tightened the rocker arm down until there was a slight drag when turning the pushrod, then I tighted 1/3 - 1/2 and moved on to the next rocker arm. This info is fairly similar to the info in the Monroe book. Good luck!! Erik ------------------ 1966 Ford Mustang 2+2 Mine - Restomod in Progress 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe Dad's - Original Unrestored

John, that's just for preload for an initial start of a new engine. Setting them while running is THE way to have them right. Get them clacking then tighten them down 1/2 turn. {Assuming you have the adjustable valvetrain and not the later positive stop type. If you have the '65 heads you're all set.}------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

I have my original 65 heads, and I am going to do it the way I was intending to do it originally. I will cut out my old valve covers and set them while running. Thanks to all of you for your help once again. You have all had a hand in helping me restore my 65, you should all be proud of a job well done, I consider it a community effort , you guy`s and Grrls are great. JOHN
