Okay, Down here in Australia we have a version of the modular motor that uses the 5.4l Explorer Iron block, 32valve dohc cobra heads and a Cobra-R intake. What are the chances that one of these will fit between the Shock towers of a '65 fastback? Its good for 350hp and 370ftlb out of the box. Theres also a 390hp version.Ben

Ben,I have a 5.4l in my F-250 hooked up to the '66 'stang's trailer. The 5.4 is roughly 28+ inches wide, and the '66 is roughly 24"s between the shock towers. If you're going to get a 5.4 in there you will have to eliminate the shock towers and go to a rack and pinion front suspension. SteveW

I just put a 4.6L 32V in a '55 Ford and it started out being a nasty fit. I've put Fe's and 460's in these old Fords in the past without any issues at all. But this 4.6 32V was considerably wider in the stock control arm area which tells me you'll need to consider putting a different suspension under your 'Stang. The 5.4L has a taller block height so you're setup would even be wider than mine.I went with a Mustang II rack and pinion setup under my '55 which fixed everything. Even the '96/98 Cobra long tube headers slipped in when I got thru. ------------------ Ted E. Fe's are plenty fast, but "Y"'s are fun when they run in the nines.

How much space would I gain if I went to coil overs with a 2.25" diameter spring and, erm, "altered" the shock towers? Is the problem area actually as low as the upper control arm pivot area? Thanks

-DVS Restorations- specializes in modular retrofits. Their site is presently offering little information but you can contact them via E-Mail.There are four basic ways to increase the engine bay size to accept this engine... - Go to the coil over shocks you mentioned. That would allow you to cut back the towers somewhat. -Total Control Products- has an illustration of their setup on their page.
- -Crites Restorations- has a kit that allows you to cut the aprons back ala Thunderbolt.
- There are coming online kits that allow the retrofit of strut suspension from a FOX Mustang which will allow the cutting of the shock towers back. -Fatman Fabrications- is one, DVS is another.
- Go the Mustang II route and you can eliminate the towers altogether.
The strut kits are going to be nice as you can go to later style braking and steering.

Ted, There is presently a member looking for information on putting a 460 into a '56. On your conversion, was there a swap kit available or did you fabricate your own mounts? -Here is the referring URL- if you have the time to help him out. Thanx! No chance whatsoever between the stock shock towers. The 4.6L is wider than a 460 and the 5.4L is taller and wider (and heavy). A Pantera will take a 460 with no problems but a 4.6L requires the inner fenders to be notched. > How much space would I gain if I went to coil overs with a 2.25" diameter > spring and, erm, "altered" the shock towers? Is the problem area actually > as low as the upper control arm pivot area? Judging from my experience with a 351C in a '66 fastback, I don't think that would help much. The upper control arm point would likely need to be moved. Easiest would be a Mustang II style front end. Dan Jones

I've been looking at pictures of the Mustang II front end, and 3 things: 1. Are the upper wishbones really much shorter, cos they don't look it? 2. Not sure about putting the suspension loads in through the rails at the bottom, the shell was designed to take the shock/spring loads out through the towers. 3. Not too sure i can actually get my hands on a Mustang II front end down here. All the rodders use assorted holden (GM- ewwwwwwwwwwww) front ends.Looked at the strut setup, not a huge fan of struts, and we didn't get the Fox series Stangs down here Now, will lowering the upper wishbone mounting point Shelby style help me much?? Thanks guys. Ben

I run the Global West arms which are lower than the Shelby and they don't provide any additional clearance. Another option would be the mini-towers by Griggs Racing. The Griggs bits work very well for road racing but are pricey. Dan Jones

Rod and custom makes a heck of a front end kit for several different cars. I have one in my Cyclone. I could put about any motor with this kit as I have NO shock tower now. here are some pics... http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/sdf250mn/lst?&.dir=/Cyclone+project&.src=ph&.begin=9999&.view=t&.order=&.------------------ 70 cyclone spoiler 429CJ awaiting 545 stroker 99 F250SD 4X4 PSD 89 SHO 3.0L 5sp 91 SHO 3.0L 5sp 95 SHO 3.2L auto 70 F250 crewcab 360 4sp awaiting CJ from Cyclone 80 Mustang 302 C6 79 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 360 94 Firebird Formula V8(LT1) 6sp

Have Rod and Custom got a web-page?? Certainly does appear to be heaps of room in your engine bay now. What steering rack are you using? Because we drive on the left over here I'd need a RHD rack... Wonder if a mk3/4 Cortina is the same as a Mustang II underneath. Thanks Guys Ben
