I went to the track the past weekend for test and tuning. On the first 2 warm up runs I tested the shifting of the tranny and tried to see what rpm gave me the most mph. The car ran a best of 116.7 mph when shifting at 6200 in 1st gear and then 6000 in the last 2 shifts but I was still stuck on 12.05. The tires weren't sticking to the track so well at 2500 rpm launch, so I added a 90lb bag of pea gravel to the trunk to try to get my 60' times below 1.80. On the next run I held the tach at about 2700 rpms and lifted the clutch on the 3rd yellow. It left hard and didn't bog or spin!! I made sure to hit the gears and I knew it felt better than any previous run so I was exited to get my timeslip. I read it and couldn't believe it!! It said 11.86 @ 116.6 mph!! I finally did it. The young lady at the timeslip booth congratulated me and commented on how nice the car looked and ran. Then she told me to go see the manager in room 202. All he had to say was, "if you ever run 11's again without a roll bar, I'm going to have to send you home". ------------------ 1966 Mustang Coupe: Custom glass hood and BIG scoop sits atop a 289 stroked to 331 c.i., Steel crank and girdle, 5.4 H-beams, Forged slugs, TFS alum. heads, ported Stealth 8020 intake, Xtreme 274 Solid Roller, Holley 750 HP, long tubes, 4speed, 9" 3.50 posi. Hell Yea!Those are some killer mph's!!! I'd love to see how that thing would run with a strong drivetrain, a set of slicks... and a rollbar. It's definitely got the 'wheeties'! My youngest brother and his boy was there watching and they were just as exited as I was! All he could say was "Holy @#!! that thing will fly"!! Everyone in the family wants to ride in the car now that the news is out. I just want to thank friends here for listening and helping with my car. I plan on shifting it at 5500 rpms at the track so I won't have to install a roll bar. I recently finished restoring the interior and I just want to enjoy it for awhile.
