I know that my CJ likes 38 deg total and it is all in by 3000. But what RPM should the timing advance start? I have 2 early Unilites mechanical advance distributors and am going to send them to Mallory to update the advance internals, and need to tell them how to set them up for my motor. Right now both of them are having trouble returning to 0. I like to Idle at 750 to 800.

Have them locked so you can set the total advance full time.

Then have it set at 14 degrees, all in by 2k RPM.
14 x 2 = 28 + 10 = 38 total.

Or wire in a kill switch and just get the engine turning over before you hit it.

People think you're driving a monster when they see you do that.

I have mine locked out and @ 36 total. I use a MSD Retard Box. It lets you pull out 10 or 25 degrees when you hit the key and also lets me pull out 2,4,6,8,10, degrees when I activate the n2o... I tried the kill switch way to....It works also. To many things for me to remember when starting.....LOL

Glen,

It'll start with the timing locked out.

Mel's is 13-1 with 36 btdc and it starts aok.
congrat's on the 12 flat run today too! Very cool!!
I'm on the hotel's intrnet tv thingy, and it's pretty sloooow. Be back soon. But really try locking it out, it'll idle better and have more vacumm too. With your stick you'll be ok, just don't lug the engine at low rpms.
