I'm curious about how much oil pressure is enough and how much is overkill and hurts horsepower?

My current engine runs at about 20 pounds at idle but goes up as the engine revs up.

Just wondering if I should try to have higher oil pressure with my new engine by restricting the top end or if it would be just wasting hp.

Thanks

I think how much oil pressure is something that is also determined by what motor it is, and what clearances are. My cleveland for example, runs fairly loose clearances, and has around 100 lbs at idle when cold. Once it gets warmed up,it carries around 40-45 at idle and around 70 lbs at WOT. And that's using a 5W-30 synthetic oil.
I don't think most windsor (289-351) based combos run that much pressure. But, since I've never ran a windsor that wasn't basically stock, I don't really know.

My son's 302 crate engine runs 25 at idle and 55 at WOT. Has been that way since it was new and if has ~8K on it now.

Mines the same way
As long as it has pressure I'm happy.

You should have 10 psi pressure rise for every 1000 rpm increase over idle.. Bruce

I put a blueprinted stock pump in my 331 because of all the horror stories about dist. gears wearing out and pins shearing. My hot engine oil pressure stays at 40 psi idle, 55 cruising, and 65 max. I checked my dist. and cam gear yesterday and the wear pattern looks good even using the stock gear with the street roller cam. I did my first 3000 mile oil change and found NO particles in the oil filter or even on the magnet in the pan!.

A lot of, if not most, street rollers are designed to be used with a cast distributor gear.

As for the 10 psi for every 1000 rpm, thats a really old "standard" started by those outdated techs at Crower. You know, the same techs that say not to use synthetic oil . That standard is also outdated and is nothing more than an old wives tale now. I have seen a lot of roundy round motors with wet sump systems live at 8000+ rpm with only 60 psi oil pressure, and do it for an entire season.
