69 302? Is it any better then a 77-77 351w? Some u guys said a 76-77 351w has only 8.5 compression and only 160-180 rear wheel hp so what would a 69 302 have? I have both motors and if they are comparable, why not go with the lighter motor of the two and headers are more available for the one.

The '69 302 had 9.5:1 cr and was rated 210 horsepower at the flywheel.

What condition are both engines in? The 302 is over 30 years old, & the 251W is at least 25 years old. Unless one or the other has been rebuilt recently, I wouldn`t expect either one to be prime swap material.

The car has no motor in it now. These are my only two options for now. I only want too put on in the car so I can drive the car around for the summer and work on it. The engine will be coming out in the winter for a rebuild but for now, there is no point. I just want too drive it.

I would put in the 351w if you just want to get it running and get everything hooked up.Then when you pull it apart you have more cubes to start with to build one hell of a motor out of.

Why not toss the 302, and build the 351W while you're driving it?

How do u build a motor while its in the car running? I am not trying too be ignorant, I just not sure what u mean. I just purchased a aftermarket edelbrock torker 2 and gt40 heads for the 351 so I am leaning that way and I am ordering a comp 270 cam in the next day or so if I go with the 351. I also would like too go with a holley dp, but I am unsure of what size too use yet.

Yes,only if you can get the 302 running for little to no money.
That way you have a fun driver and all your money and time and parts can on into the 351w for next summer.
If the 302 needs alot of to get it running. Then put the 351w in and old off on the parts until you rebuild it.

I was just down at the local machine shop and this is what the guy down there told me. He got out his books and he looked at the numbers and said this. He said the 69 302 was rated with gross hp and the 75-77 was measured with net hp. So with that being said there hp numbers are about equivelent but the 351w yields much more torque. So with that being said, the 351w would be the way too go.
