I'm wanting to get into autocross and drag racing. I know they're completely different things, but I also know they will both benefit from a cam upgrade and rear gears. If that is done, I gain power for the strip, and rpms for the course when I'm holding it in one gear. I was considering a 268h with 3.25 rear gears. Do those match? What would you suggest? I'm still wanting to make my engine very effecient, so I want matching parts. Its a 4bbl 289, performer intake, hooker headers. With this change, particularly the gears, I dont want it to affect downshifting...I've heard that some people change gears, and now their car hardly ever downshifts when they punch it:frown:. What do you think? One more thing, what if I only got the cam, would it still help a lot?

I'd do just gears if you can only get one for now.

I don't have any experience with autocrossing but basically you want great acceleration so it is similiar to drag racing in that respect.I think even lower gears would be better as they will also help you decelerate quicker as well to get slowed up and around those cones.I would go with 4.11s or so.For the dragstrip you may need to go to a bigger cam to help your motor in the upper rpms you will be turning with the lower rear end gears. It will be a fine line here though as you don't want to lose buttom end punch that you need coming off of corners.I'll leave the cam selection to someone more qualified.Obviously your suspension would have to be set up differently,a set of adjustable shocks may be a good compromise between the two.I'm not sure what your saying about the downshifting problem. Is your car an automatic (I assume)if so just manually downshift it if you have to.------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html

I have a freind that autocrosses and drag races his Camaro. It's a 12 flat 1/4mi street car and he runs slapper bars and BFG drag radials. He says the drag radials work great for the cone racing too. Put some gears in yours, like 3.50/3.55s as a first step. SteveW

A lot of people have suggested for me to put 3.55s in my car. I agree that should help a lot, but this car is more of a street car than it is a race car...so I don't want to kill my gas mileage or cruising rpms. I have a c-4 tranny (no overdrive). With that said, do you still suggest 3.55s? or would 3.25s be sufficeint? Thanks

I'd say the 3.0 are sufficeint if you just want to cruise around. And get on it now and then. The 3.25 are good highway gears too.But if you want more racing gears go with at least the 3.55 gears.Or go with an AOD or 5 spd then go to 4.11 and still fly the highways.

So you want a car thats quick in the quarter and competitive in autocross, but it is mild mannered and gets great mileage You usually have to give something to get something back. You'll have to decide what you really want.------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html

That's doable, but it's quite expensive. My thoughts are a good, well thought out suspension and a turbocharged EFI SBF with a mild cam and heads along with a manual tranny with overdrive. You're never going to be happy autocrossing with a slushbox.

What are you top speeds with these different gears? What gears do you have, transmission, and top speed?
