I'm looking to pick up some hp and effecientcy by making my engine run as best as it can. What are some tuning tricks that will do that? I know there is something about advancing timing or something like that. What about some carb tuning tips. Anything else? By the way, its a 4bbl 289 w/headers and c-4. Thanks

Have you ever changed the timing before?
If so start with a good tune up.Change plugs and check and or change the cao and rotor.Check and adjust the timing.Check and adjust the A/F mixtures screws on the carb.
Getting the car running the best it can now. Then you can start to advance the timing by 2 at a time and test the car see how it feels. This is better done when at the track.

If you have a factory cast iron intake, try switching it to an Edelbrock RPM aluminum.
And maybe try a Holley double pumper 600cfm carb, instant power when you mash it down, but fuel mileage might suffer a bit, unless you can keep your foot out of it most of the time...but that's no fun.
I'm not a Holley expert, I'm just still excited about how much better my engine runs when I switched to the double pumper.

Ok now you need to go out and get a Ford Shop Manual.A must have book, and pick up an Haynes repair manual too. Both books will tell you how to.And then these guys can tell you, whats the best.

Try the timing at 10,and get a vacuum gauge and turn the idle mixture screws one at a time, until you get the highet reading. Then turn your idle back to were it was before you started. Then try your timing at 12-14 and see where the car runs and drives the best.
