1.12 60 fts. Took the motor on a stick to test n tune today. Made 5 passes. No full passes. First, had a problem with the shifter cable and then the air shifter, so it wouldn't go into 2nd gear. Hated I didn't get to make a full pass. But man, what a rush. 1.12's today, shutting it off at 300 ft or so and still running 6.0's @ only 75. It's got lot's more in it. Never played with the launch rpm. 4000 every time. I figure with a good tuneup and higher launch rpm and a good track it'll go 1.05 60' or better. The alky setup is running rich also. Gotta lean it out. Seemed to find a delay setting I liked. The last two lights were .508, .504. In an earlier post I talked about the converter. Thought it might be too loose. It stalls to 6000 on the trans brake. Doesn't go that high on launch. Guess it's because of the car's weight. It seemed to like it. It stalls mid 5000's. Not sure exactly. I was busy. The track wasn't as good today. 1.14 60'. But it went 5.01 @ 139. Unreal how hard this thing pulls. Ran that twice and then ran a 5.04 due to tire spin. The track was really going away. Lot's of street cars dragging water and gravel to the starting line. It's still got more in it. No tuning done yet. Timing is locked at 36?. Gonna try to lowering to 34? and see if it responds. If not I'll go the other way. EGT with the toilet is looking real close to right. Seeing max temps of 1045. From 1050-1100 is supposed to be what to look for. I'll lean it out 1-2 pill sizes and try it. These times are launching @ 4200, but short shifting it @ 6400. It'll spin much higher, but I'm tring to take it easy on the Scat cast crank. It seems like it would like a shift point around 6900-7K. It's still pulling like a freight train on the top end. Shut it off after the 1/8 and still was running 8.20's in the 1/4 at only 118-120 on the brakes. Flat out it it should run prob 7.80@ 175. Later, David Cole

Most of the guys I used to race with run around 1150 EGT temps. They claim so long as it stays under 1200 it's safe. They also claim a little lean is more consistant than a little fat. I don't know for sure, I'm just passing on what I have heard. I do know my buddy with a dual toileted 540 bbc powered '63 vette that runs 5 teens, runs his around 1250.

What's the deal, Dave? Have you been told/are you aware of a problem with the durability/safety of Scat cast cranks? Ryan

Not really a problem. Just taking it easy on it. I want the crank to last 2 seasons, then I'll have enough dough saved to put a billet crank in it. This crank in the this thing is huge and very heavy. 4.500 stroke, 3.00 mains, BBC rod journals. It's internally balanced, but the bob weight is something like 2300 grams. I guess I'm just paranoid. These cranks are cast steel and supposed to be about 30% stonger than a cast iron crank. Scat says that are good to 900 hp. I have read here and there about dragracers finding minor stress cracks after a season or two when they had the crank magnafluxed. I don't think the stress cracks are from rpm. I think they are from popping/banging while on the Two-Step. Two-Steps are the not the best thing for any crank, especially a big heavy crank like mine running on methanol. The cracked cranks I have read about were all still running fine when found, but I don't want to take the chance of it grenading "if" there were to be one of them in mine due to the Two-Step. Most likely there were be no problem. There I go, being paranoid again. It is a good feeling to know that anytime I want a 4 sec pass all I have to do is turn the rpms up a little more. Say 6800 instead of 6400. Later, David Cole [This message has been edited by Dave_C (edited 03-24-2003).]

I understand now. Do most dragsters run a two-step?
