Ok fellas, I decided to post this here since I know a handful of you gearheads have been in this situation before.

Yesterday, as I started my car up for a little cruise, my neighbor two houses across the street from me comes over and says he's tired of hearing my cars rumbling. He claims the other neighbors "are going to call the city" on me. I told him, it was 11AM and that I can do whatever I pleased at this time. No HOA in my old town neighborhood, btw. He also complained that I started my other car at 6:30am on Saturday morning which I apologized about since I knew it was pretty early to start. But for him to come at me at 11AM and say that my other neighbors are complaining and threatening to call the city made me PISSED!! He said they didn't want to approach ME.

I asked him who were the complaining neighbors and he replied with a few names. Right after he left, I went to 2 of 3 of those supposedley angry neighbors and asked them if it was a big problem to them and that the other guy claimed to say you were also mad at me but didn't want to talk to me. I told them that I respect this neighborhood VERY much and would like to keep it looking beautiful and clean and keep all the neighbors happy. Both of those neighbors I visited said it was loud, but they never said they were going to call the city. I told them I would keep it to a minimum and no more early morning starts. They also said that other guy is retired and has nothing to do.

I hear people using their table saws and shop vacs all the time and we never complain!! WTF!?!?

Erik

Rock,

You can't please everyone, no matter what you do. Is your car legal according to the Ca. laws? If so I don't see any recourse your "neighbor" has.
My own opinion is to get it running and get on the road without undue warm-ups.
You know if you're running it longer and louder than necessary.
Believe it or not some people don't share our passion for fast cars.
Try to keep the peace. It's better than making enemies.

It's the image they react to. You're the neighborhood bad boy!

Once, a long time ago, I was working on my Sprint and a cop car pulled up and said he got a report from one of my neigbors that I was racing up and down my street. I asked the officer to follow me and I showed him my freshly painted engine bay, and my engine on the stand.

What are you running for mufflers?

Flowmaster 2 chamber Deltaflow.

I just got off the phone with Dynomax tech support and the lady recommended Dynomax SuperTurbos and for even quieter sound, she recommended the Dynomax Race bullet "straight-through" before the SuperTurbos. I hope that won't yield too much HP. I could always unbolt it when I need to, I guess .

Do you guys think adding the resonator before the SuperTurbos would quiet it down even more? The bullets are a straight through design, so maybe HP loss would be minimal if none.

I guess I'm lucky. Three of my neighbors race and have there own cars that make lots of noise. I don't complain to them and they don't complain to me. It's just one happy neighborhood. One neighbor told me that he loved to hear my car, no matter what time it is. Now.........if I could do something about those dogs.

Mine are just happy that I put the 1 chamber Flows back on the car. I felt real bad about loading and unloading it this winter with open headers. No one complained though,

My neighbor and I have had the same conversation... Difuse it if at all possible. If they get enough complaints, the local police are going to make that hobby a nightmare.... Find out what he thinks is acceptable... I go over and warn my neighbor in advance... Haven't had a visit from the boy's in blue since... Just my .02.....

Yeah, I plan to quiet the car down a bit with some SuperTurbos. I respect all my neighbors, but they should also take into consideration that I only start my car once a week if not once every 2-3 weeks.

Reminds me of 2 years ago when we just got my car together the night before heading to the NMCA race at Maple Grove. I took the car (illegal) out on the road in front of my house at 11:00pm for a quick blast then pulled it back in the garage. I went inside to get cleaned up and my buddy's were going to get stuff loaded up for an all-night tow(that's another story!). So anyhow, I get into the house and remembered I had forgotten something in the garage. When I step out on the back porch I see 2 state police cars setting in my driveway I should have stayed in the house, as one of my friends had already started telling the cop about a white mustang (that looked just like the one he was leaning on) was tearing up and down the road as we were working on mine. So the cop asks me if the car's mine, I say yes, he threatens to have it impounded, I fess up to the deed, and he gives me a slap on the wrist and leaves. I never did figure out who called the cops

The first time I fired the car up to break in the cam I didn't have the new exhaust in yet. 3000 rpm for 30 minutes with open headers.

Last week with the new cam 3000 rpm with flowmasters. A friend 2 blocks away dropped by. He heard it in his house.

I am on the city council in charge of public safety so I didn't hear of a complaint.

I am switching to the dynomax ultraflows. They are said to flow twice the cfm of the flowmasters and are still quieter.

Erik that really makes me mad, what a bunch of BS.I've been on your street and the house are far enough apart. And you don't look anything like a BAD BOY.
I need to do my cam break in maybe this week. And I may have to do it with open headers.I have yet to have any complain about the noise level of my car.But I do have the 3 chambers on my car.I leave when I want to and come home any time I want to.I have a few black marks in my drive way too.I have yet to have any one say anything but cool car.And the house on my street are alot closer together then yours.
I don't want to start something either.I don't the cops coming by house.
Two years ago I ran my car in my garage with open shorty headers. And no one ever said a thing.

And like you, I hear power tools going all the time. And wing dinger bikes running. So they can do that I should be able to drive my car.

The first year I lived in Denver, I was in a townhouse complex where there was an alley between two rows of houses that lead to everyone's ground level garages. My two chamber flows made mucho noise resonating off both lines of buildings in the alley. I raced at Bandimere on Friday nights, so I normally didn't get home from the track until after midnight. Fortunately I had a downward grade all the way from the entrance of the community all the way to my garage. I got into the habit of cutting off the motor at the community entrance and coasting to my garage and pray that my automatic door opener would work before I made the turn in!!!

All of my neighbors were quite understanding after I told them of my method...

My neighbors put up with alot of noise from me. But on the other hand thay all have dogs that bark 24/7 so it all works out fine.

I guess it just depends on whare you live. A guy up the road drives his ATV up and down the road, I could CARE LESS.

I had the cops called on me one time. But I was in the shop, banging and slaming at 1:30 AM, so I could understand that.

Unless the guy just wants to start trouble, ANY normal minded person should expect some noise from a neighbor or two. Thats just life. But to come up and bitch at you at 11:00 is just stupid.

Personaly, I don't understand whats the big deal with noise and some people. Noise doesn't kill you, it doesn't take years off you're life, it doesn't make you fat...I'd tell that SOB to just DEAL WITH IT!!

One of my neighbors once stopped me on the street and asked me if I thought another one of our neighbors {who has a nest of Novas} made too much noise. I told her it was no worse than a neighbor with a couple of constantly barking dogs. At the time, she had two dogs that would bark at anything. That shut her up!

That's what I'd tell him. Like mentioned earlier, if you're not breaking any laws, he'll just have to deal with it or move.

Boy does this sound familiar.Had no problems with my neighbour until I built my garage. To make a long story short he doesn't like it and has done everything in his power to have the city stop me from building it but he wasn't successful as I had done everything by the book. Now everytime I go outside he is complaining that I make too much noise. He was complaining about my snowmobile idleing at 3 pm in the afternoon as I was loading it on the trailer(says he was trying to nap!).I have tried to keep things peaceful but he has made it clear he is never going to get over the garage so I told him to stay away from me and not to speak to me unless he has something civil to say.Should be interesting when the stang comes out of storage this spring

What if you offered to buy them ear plugs? OR go out every morning for a month and fire your 12 guage into the air about 3 times then go back inside. They will forget about the car.

We used to have the same problem when I lived in the Marina in San Leandro. My dad would park the stang in the street and work on it sometimes. This old lady came over and say some of the neighbors complained it was making the neigborhood look bad and they were going to call the city. It was just a bunch of crap. My dad found out who the neigbors were and went to there house and told them it was a public street and if they had a problem just tell him face to face instead of just telling everybody else. While growing up in the San Leandro/San Lorenzo while I was younger I noticed some people like to be in others business. I don't see nothing wrong with starting the car at 11am, its the middle of the day. There would be times were you would hear lawnmowers going on at 6-8am in the morning. I start my car 2-3 times a week, sometimes at 9am, neighbors never really had a problem so far, they could car less. Some of my neighbors have there music, leafblowers, electric saws on most of the day. It's loud and irritating, but its during the day so they have every right to do it. They respect my space just as much as I respect there's. Instead of those neighbors complaining to other neighbors, they should of just talked to you like an adult. I don't think they will call the city on you, its pretty pointless. What can the city do? Keep the 2 chamber Delta Flows on so I can hear it someday. Hope everything works out.

I have 3 chamber flowbast@rds now. It's lound enough that I am pretty sick of the drone....
I was thinking about the same exhaust system that Dynomax reccomended.
I have held and looked through the race bullet mufflers. I can't imagine that they will hurt power any.....
Let me us know how it quiets down.

My neighbor never I mean never complains about anything, whether it is riding the dirt bike in the back yard, we have about 50 ft. between our houses, but we have a huge backyard, or me revving the mustang at 11 at night because I am still working on it or coming home with it at 1 in the morning. Although when I come home late I try to idle it up the driveway. I do the same for them. I don't complain when they use there gas powered leave blower at 6 in the morning or blow snow at 6 in the morning, or when he shoots stray cats with his 20 gauge at midnight. We get along good that way. He understands the noise I make, and I understand the noise he makes.

I think living in the boonies has it's rewards, my neighbors are at least 300 feet away except for one, and he has flowmaster exhaust on his truck, no complaints from anyone.

Actually I can understand why I pi$$ed off my neighbor because I was doing 100mph "dry hops" on the road at 11:00pm. Any other time I could do it and never actually had a problem. However, we just moved a couple months ago and the new neighbors have not been initiated yet!

Well, I don't have any mufflers on my 68 and so far I haven't had anyone say anything.

Sometimes I even have neighbors walk over with a big smile asking what it will run or what engine....

I guess most of my neighbors know I don't really care what they think... I've been here for almost 20 years.

If the only thing I do is work on the racecar every once in a while... oh well.

However, I don't cut my grass in the am either.

Back in 1980 I had a 1969 Mercury Cyclone with a 428 and a 4 speed. The car had headers and Thrush straight through mufflers bolted to the headers when I bought it. One night (10pm) after geting off work I went to visit another gear head buddy. He lived about three miles from where I worked. When I drove up in his driveway, he told me how many times and how hard I shifted on every shift I made on the three mile drive to his house.

don't feel bad my neighbors are the same way. i live with my parents in a very nice neighborhood, with a golf course view. in the spring when the cars come out of storage we have at least 7 or 8 cars in the driveway at all times. these people drive jags, volvos etc, just imagine how they like to see cars lined up and down our driveway. i constantly get hollered at for gettin on it too much or not letting it idle down the road when it's late at night. maybe one of these days i'll have a house in the country and i can get on it all i want. oh they don't like my car too well because of the purple hornies on it. oh well i love the sound!
