 | posted 12-05-2002 12:48 AM Well gang, it's that time of the year again.
Tony and I are off to the Performance and Racing Industry show in Indianapolis. This is THE show for Drag racers and gearheads as all of the new performance products are show cased and introduced. Remember the Super Victor, Dart block, AFR heads, and other items from the last few years? All of the high performance manufacturer's display at the PRI show. Everyone who is anyone in drag racing or oval track racing is there for three days of smoozing and lying (us included) trying to hook some sponsor help. Our primary goals are to see what's new and interesting. I suspect that there will be a lot of import crap this year.
We'll see. I'll give a full repor when we return and try to take as many interesting pics as possible. Bee good!

All we ever needed to get a pass to the PRI show out here was a resale number. The first couple out here were in Santa Clara at the Convention center, then it was at the Convention center in Sacramento for at least one year. The last one I went to was in Reno at the (you guessed it) Convention center. It was always a good time, and like Alex says, all of the new racing stuff is there. My buddy went back to Indy for the PRI show a couple of years ago and told me that Indy made our PRI show out here look like a small swap meet by comparison, there were a lot more vendors in Indy.
My favorite part of the weekend was always the breakfast on Friday morning. There was always a guest speaker, the first year we went it was Smokey Yunick (funny guy), one year it was Bobby Allison, but the best one was John Force. He called Lori Johns up on stage and made a cell phone call in front of the whole place and put her on the phone with someone from Fram to show how easy it was to get associate sponsorship....her primary sponsor was Head....you can imagine the jokes coming out of Force while she was on the phone.
There was always a question and answer session with a couple of guys running around the crowd with microphones. My buddy stood up and asked Force what he would suggest we do to get some new dragstrips opened since a lot of our tracks in California had recently been closed. Force's answer was "I think we should shoot the Governor!" I thought the roof was gonna come off of the place!
In the early years at Santa Clara they would have a 5 man pit crew contest on Saturday night were you would change 2 tires and gas up a stock car. 4 of my buddies and I entered it and won it the first year at just under 14 seconds, the guys who owned the car that they were using were pissed and changed a couple of guys to enter another team (each team only got 2 shots) and they still didn't beat our time. We won a jacket and shirt and some shoes, it was pretty cool.
The next year we went and the guys who owned the car had assemble a group of "ringers"...lol...who had been practicing and were ready to "take our title". We didn't even have one of the guys from the previous year with us so we talked Larry into doing it with us. We did it in just over 11 seconds and smoked those pro dudes. The guys running the event told us that the only team that was able to break 11 seconds at Indy was a group of Rusty Wallace's Cup guys....we thought we did pretty good for a bunch of half drunk drag racers....lol.

 | posted 12-05-2002 09:07 PM Well folks . . . the report is in. And a very successful day was had by and for Moneymaker Racing!
Alex and Tony secured some great sponsorship deals (some renewed, and some new), met with some important people, and are having a great time doing it. I think Alex is doing some xmas shopping for me to. I'll be curious to see what's under the tree! But all is going well. They got through almost half the main show, but have a long way to go tomorrow and Sat. morning. More info to come! ------------------Beth

I wasn invited to go this year and passed on it. Was there any new Ford stuff that looked interesting?

I'm not sure how far a drive Atlanta is. I am about in the middle of the state, real close to Raleigh/Durham. I have never been to the drag expo, but have read some stuff about it. Sounds like it would be a good time also. IP: Logged |
