Well I made what is likely my last trip to the track last week. As some of you may know I put together a mild 289 for my '68 Fairlane Fastback last year. I was hoping to run in the 13's with it before the end of this summer. My first run of the year was a 14.7**. But I ran a 14.4** before the end of the night. Every time I went to the track I would slice a tenth or so from the times. A little carb tuning here, timing curve there and I kept widdling away at it.My last change was a 1" 4 hole spacer. I went to the track and ran a 14.017 with the air cleaner on. I pulled the filter and ran a 14.014 some timing changes slowed me down a bit to the 14.021 range. Worked on my burnout a bit to get rid of the tiny bit of wheel spin I had, tuned the timing a bit more, and then ran two 14.003's in a row. Darn it, I just couldn't break into the 13's. Up for the winter is new valve springs and retainers, new roller rockers (possibly 1.7's), a very much needed 3000 rpm stall converter, and an NOS system. Still hoping a little more carb tuning will get me into the 13's next summer without the juice. Just thought I would share, B-loose

Since you are that close now, the convertor alone will easily put you into the 13's. A convertor can make or break a combination.

Yep, cheaping out on the converter was the dumbest thing I did. Everything else worked so well together. Looking back I wish I would have spent the extra $250, that seems so cheap now.Oh well, I have something to look forward to for next year. B-loose
