Was having a great Sunday morning drive, until my car started sputtering as if running out of fuel. I coasted it to a gas station, put a few gallons of fuel in it but still no dice. Checked the usual stuff, zapped the he11 out of myself checking for spark , finally got it to fire, sort of. Won't stay running below 2800-3000 rpm, but I did nurse it home. 6AL box & billet distributor... the dist is new, the box is not. I haven't checked electrical current to/from the box yet, haven't even pulled the plugs yet to look (letting the motor cool off some, letting me cool off too ) The darnedest thing... it's been hard starting from the first fire-up, but of course nothing like this. Could I have a box problem?

My fuel gage isn't registering, I may in fact have run it out of fuel, but I'm not positive. The fuel tank is re-lined, it's only had fuel in it for three weeks at the most. I can't realistically see there being foregin material in a brand new fuel system, but anything's possible I suppose. My carb is a 3310 Holley, suppose it did draw some crud into itself... could this keep the motor from running under 3000? There still remains the hard starting condition prior to this problem... I've got the timing totaled out at 35* at 3200, it seems to be happiest there. Idle screws are only about 5/8 turn out, almost 15 hg" manifold vaccum; which is a bit suprising condcidering the 270S cam. I'm still cooling off

Todd I'd like to help you out.But it sounds like your doing ok talking to yourself, so far. I sure hope it was just low fuel, but that dosen't make up for the hard starting.SCOOP ------------------

it sounds like the filter is clogged just enough to not let it idle.you probably found it by now.usually when an msd box dies, car wont run at all. let us know what you find.g`luck.

My experiance has been, either MSD works or doesnt. There is no in between. Sounds either fuel related, or maybe a vacuum leak. But since it just started happening, I would rule out the vacuum leak.

The more I think about it, I think fastford and kv are on the right track (you too Scoop )Just got back from a bbq this afternoon, and while there I was planning to tear the carb down and blow it all out. Heck, I need a power valve change anyway. I've got a 6 in the primary metering block, with 15" vac at idle and a 32 squirter, it's got just a hair of stumble comming off idle. What size pv would any of you guys recommend I try next?

this is just a reminder, you should have an in-line fuel filter,do not rely on the little 1 in the carb.it will clog easily & often if you have junk in the tank. get 1 that is easy to take apart, clean, replace filter unit.

Thumper, check the needle and seats for crap in them, sounds like to me from what you say it's flooding over? pull the sight plugs on the carb and see if there is too much gas in the bowls? was the plugs wet?

Ok, problem solved All 8 plugs were sopping wet ... while spinning the motor over without plugs, cleared a buncha raw gas out of the cylinders. Stopped cranking, heard a liquid trickling sound... fuel was gushing out the primary venturis! Tore it all down, blew out everything, put a 10.5 pv in the primary metering block, all better now Also opened up the plug gap to .050, took one heavy silver spring out of the dist and replaced it with a light silver spring, and took a spin. Tire spin, that is
