I did 5 runs what a blast.I had alot of fun,I cant wait togo again.I won all 5 races, one win the other had a red light, and the other the guy couldn't get his out of the water box. These are all 5 times. .836 light 2.670 60's [email protected] .632 light 2.664 60's [email protected] .761 Light 2.634 60's [email protected] .676 light 2.642 60's [email protected] .716 2.622 60's [email protected] Well the times weren't has good as I'd like. But the car ran real good and never got over 190degrees even with the outside temps of 90+. I put my rear tires at 22lbs.Never changed my timing because my car was running good. Tire spin was not to bad, about the 1st 20feet or so.I was power braking the car to 2200rpm and leaving at half pedal, and then I'd floor it. You guys have any input. Yes Todd we had great time.My son daughter and wife and Father and mom were all there.I even got to race my dad in his 88gt. Thats always cool to line with your pops. As slow as my times were they were as fast if not faster then about 1/3 cars there. I noticed at the track, guy dont trash talk like they do on the street. As a matter of fact then tend to play down there car.But they all say same thing My car would run faster but,I cant get any tracktion. SCOOP, I think it doesn't matter what your times are as long as it's consistant and you had fun. You can always improve your car's times, but it's hard to improve on a family outing were everyone had a great time. That's what it's all about. Winning some cash is a blast too! Sorry SCOOP, that's a mid 16 usually. But your car would probably be in the low 16s because it has a lot more power than the 1/8th mile times show because your 60' time is ghastly. Did you try any other launching techniques? I pulled a 2.7 60' once when my car died and I had to pop the clutch to restart it . Try rolling into the throttle slowly, even on a poorly prepped track that should give you a 2.4 or 2.5. try some traction bars also. I have pulled 2.0 60' times on my street tires with cheap Lakewood slappers, but if the track prep is poor it's uaually more like 2.2-2.3. You ought to be able to break into the 9s Try some different launch techniques, mess around a bit without worring about your overall times and just concentrate on 60' time. It's the most important part! ------------------ -Charlie Ping 1970 Maverick Grabber [email protected] with AC and overdrive. http://www.maverickgrabber.com

Charlie,I did try to leave half throttle-and-full throttle.Didn't make any difference at all.Tire spin was not that bad either. My car seems to sit there for a sort time them it gose.No bog,it just seems to be missing something.I kinda think it's time for new carb. The old carter I'm using has been giving fits for the last year. My car also seems to pull good at 2000rpm to 4500rpm thats when it starts to drop off. I got some bars I just didn't have enough to get them on. My pops told me my car leaves the line real slow. And he said the tire spin is not that bad, about the 1st 20-25 feet.No white smoke just some noise. Mid 16's I can live that for now. So whats next, gears, motor, tires, ect..... SCOOP

Scoop,Glad you had fun, I just got back from Reno and read the paper's article on the event. You we're not bracket racing, right? I wasn't sure from the article. Also, this was a temporary track at a closed AFB, so I'm sure the prep wasn't up to normal standards?!? It never fails that a person at the track for the first time goes away disappointed with their time slips. There are 1,000s of "10 second cars" (1/4 mi) that have never been clocked! You know tubbed out, big tires, and a big block whatever and too big a cam. They won't run at a drag strip 'cause they'll lose their "bragging rights". Good job on running it, and now you have a place to start. BTW, it's time for some H.P.!! It's amazing how much H.P. helps propell a car down the track. SteveW

Steve next time swing buy and say hi. No I was not bracket racing. It was heads up only. The bracket racing started later.I know that more HP would help alot.but I still think more gear and a carb would help it the way it is. This winter I hope to get the motor rebuilt. There was a 65 there with a fresh stock rebuild 351w with alittle head work.A C4 auto with a 2000rpm convertor. And 3.50 gears and 8" slicks. He was turning 10.5 with 2.5 60's. Thats almost half of the 60'. It shouldn't spin the tires any more than 5 or 6 feet. That's about all my Lightning will spin them at the racetrack. You'll want some tire spin since the convertor isnt very loose, but thats way too much. Try putting some sandbags in the trunk to get some weight back there and mke the tires try and hook.
The whole key is, that you had fun. That's the important part.

Rob it might only be 10 feet of tire spin.Just going by what my pops told me.I know form inside the car,I heard tire spin for alittle bit off the line.I had two gallons of water, a full tool box, four folding chairs, and 3 qts of oil.It was all i could find the day of the race. Sounds like you had a blast. Your reaction times are pretty consistent for a beginner. I think you might be better off turning your idle up to about 1200 rpms on the track and just mash the gas when the tree is right, just as you would on the street. If you feel the tires let loose, feather the gas back till it grabs and give it as much gas as the tires can hold back. It should quicken your times a bit over power braking. Gotta get you some traction though! 2.1 60' times are pretty easy on street tires at our Atlanta track but theres decent rubber on the ground most of the time. Did you try sandbagging?? Putting a hundred pounds or so in the trunk can really help make those tires plant better. Looks like 9s are already there.

I'm going to try and get to Fallon Top Gun raceway on the 30th.I'll try the sand bags and will have my traction bars on by then.I'll also try to play with the timing alittle too and the 1200rpm idle seems like agood idea too.I'd like to see what it runs in the 1/4 any ways.SCOOP ------------------

Hey i am back from Reno now too.... met our Mr Scoop at his place of employment (could we even call that "work"?) LOL , and saw him run at Stead airport (old AFB) The Stead track is not only 5047ft further towards Jupiter than places i race at ,but it's uphill till 400ft and has an oddly textured pavement. I'd say with that heat (90??? you are kidding Scoop?) the corrected altitude was more like 8000ft. Fallon is 1000ft lower (tho it seemed like it was uphill all the way ) and in the middle of nowhere... bring your own shade to to either place or Reno-Fernley Raceways drags at Tiger Field airport.... nearest tree is in Oregon i think! I'd suspect the Scoopmobile runs in the 14's.

I went to the drags at Fernley for a bit on Sunday, oddly enough there were a couple 69 Camaros from Hollister CA (Larry... it was Starkweather!) and the rest were stock-ish street cars and a V8 Volvo. I went to Stead both days and they did have brackets, Steve might know the gal who won? Michelle with a blue Camaro, races at Sears... oops Infineggon or whatever. There were several fast cars, Pro Mod 58 Chevy and a trick red 67 Fairlane that looks 7-8 second-ish. I couldn't make out the announcements from some of the places i watched from, but comparing times with cars of a known ET might be a better way to estimate potential. It was a fun event, there were piles of spectators and i think that was the whole point anyways.
