I put in a rebuilt from Auto zone.Went right in ,of course. Well my vacuum advance works now.I set the timing at 13 at 900rpm.It jumps to 30 at 2400rpm now.It only was going to 22-24 before with the old dist. The weights in the dist is a 13L.Same as the old one.I had a choice between the the 13L or a 18L.With no vac advance hooked up it gose to 30degrees at 3200rpm. My car dose seem to run more smooth, but dose not seem to go any faster. What do you think about the vance and the timing ect.Ron ------------------ 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8"3.40 TracLoc,Crager SS,Black Suede. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html

30 total is not a lot of advance. I like to set my initial timing with the help of a vacuum gauge while adjusting the carb. I know all motors are different but I have about 14 to 15 degrees on my 390 hitting 35 total.------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 "No such thing as a cam thats too big"

Scoop, that's a good curve for an FE motor, Windsors don't like that much timing... 12* or so initial, totaled out w/vac advance at about 32*

I like to have all timing in by 2500 rpm. To see how much vacuum advance you have, just hook it up to manifold vacuum.I have run as much as 42 deg total timing without the vacuum advance with a 10.5:1 351W's with no spark knock. That doesn't mean you will be able to get that much. But I would say 36 easy total without the vacuum advance. re-read the post I made before about setting up the dist. With the stamping of 13L, that should get you 26 deg Mechanical advance. If you didn't install the spring kit, the heavy spring will not start until a much higher rpm and that will make it harder to get it right. Using the lighter springs in and bending the spring tabs to get the curve right, then you will should see the 26 deg Mechanical advance. Then set your base timing to 10 deg. I don't know how much vacuum advance at this point, so I can't really say what to do yet. It should have an allen adjustment in the vacuum nipple. Keep in mind, the engine does NOT have a load on it when the advance has the most vacuum. And it has MUCH less under WOT. Therefor, you can run more advance timimg at that engine load. As you go closer to WOT, you loose the vacuum signal and loose the vacuum advance timing. I have seen EEC IV systems run as much as 60 deg timing. Your not going to get that much without a computer controled engine, but you can run much more then 36 total advance vacuum, mechanical and base.
