Have a 63 Fairlane with following:
weight-3000
Eng-1979 302
Heads-stock
Trans-c-4
Cam-cam lift lobe ctrs valve lift
.265 /280 105 115 .424 .448
adv dur .50 dur
260 270 194 204
Intake-edelbrock performer rpm
Carb-edelbrock 600
Ignition-stock
Rear-462
Rear tires-26" 8.5 14" slicks
best time 1/8 9.1

Just seriously started racing last year at the young age of 55 and love it. Had many good runs but like all-- want more power. Car is for strip only-1/8. What would be the most cost vs power improvements I should do and in what order.
I do have a 76 351W eng I could use but it is stock also.
Thanks for any help.
Jim

{This is a very weak cam, try a Comp 282S with your gears}

Intake-edelbrock performer rpm {good}
Carb-edelbrock 600 {gonna need a Holley to make a Ford run, Edel carbs are for Chebbies}
Ignition-stock (duraspark, electronic? recurve it... OK }

Rear-462 {4.62-1 ratio? trac-loc, spooled or what? Good ratio tho maybe too low (hi numerically)}

Rear tires-26" 8.5 14" slicks {good}

best time 1/8 9.1
60 2.0
{s/b able to take .4 off this with some h.p.}
74.86mph
{We can help with this!! }

OK Jim welcome to M&M, you've come to right place! You need to pump up the compression by canning the smog heads and porting some 69 351w heads or buying a pair of aftermarket heads like Windsor JR's for the 302, or SR's if you wanna run the 351w. A little more camshaft and we should be able to cut a second off your 1/8 mile ets and add 10+ mph. What kinda budget are you operating under? We could fix you up with a 408w (351w stroker and put you in the 6's if that interests you.)

Welcome to M&M

The easiest way to more power is a bigger motor. And since the motor you have now would need different heads, carb, ignition, maybe an intake, to make more power, you should probably seriously consider using the 351.

Welcome,To M&M these guys really know there stuff.
I'll 3rd for the 351w more torque right away.And like Kid said you have so many items to buy aways.You can sale the 302 to off the cost of some of the new items for the 351w.And go for the Winsor SR's heads are better then spending the money on the 351w heads.
I like that body style by the way.They make cool looking racers.

Boy, I'll second that. '63's are SWEET.
Concider a single plane hi-rise, like a Victor Jr.? That manifold sure would like those short gears... would definately want deeper breathing heads and a bigger 'stick to optimize it

Thanks for all the info--Regardless of eng. I guess new heads should be # 1 to get. Windsor shows both a cast iron and aluminum with good cost differance. Other than weight what is the advantage of aluminum? Fully assembled heads have the valves, springs and studs--so which rocker arm kit should one buy.
Many ??--but I'm new to much of this.
Thanks,
jim

Hi Jim,

Welcome to our short family. Before you do anything, first and foremost decide how much you want to spend. If you stick with the 302 or go with the 351 you can achieve the same results. Lets say you had a budget of $3000, intake heads, cam lifters, timing chain and gears, ignition system and fuel system are most likely things you would want to look into first. Is this going to be a street driver or strickly 1/8 mile racer?
Things like that will play into how big of a camshaft and what type of cylinder heads you may want to go with. Any questions that you have don't hesitate to post them. Between everyone on here you will get more opinions to help you with your decisions.

When it comes time to buy parts we can get you taken care of in that department to. Whatever you need, just ask.

Thanks,

Tony
