You will have to measure the driveshaft after you install the rear end. There is no way to know what u-joint you will need without seeing the old one and the yoke that you are going to use. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00 & '01 Fleet of FoMoCo products Moneymaker Bio US Class Nationals link

The gear number are the last ones on the tag. If it has an "L" it a locker. example 3L08 is a locker , 3.08 is an open rear. RAY------------------ RAY . Thanks Ray,thats what I was thinking it was.I looked at my 94 f150 2wd.It has a 8.8 which for got about.Tag had the last numbers on the bottom of 3L08.So I though it had to be a posi,3.08 gears.Do either of you know of any one putting the 8.8 in a 65.Trying to save money and do the right thing at the same time. Ronu joint are u joints... there is only a few different sizes and any of the ones we'd be dealing with in this case can be adapted. The flange that is gonna be on a Ranger and Explorer driveshaft is the one you can attach to your driveshaft. Ranger rear end works too... make sure it's an 8.8 and not a smaller 7.5 . If in doubt, get an Explorer one.

I'm seriously interested in doing this swap as well. $300+ sure beats the $2K+ I was looking at for a built 9". Exactly how wide is a stock explorer rear?------------------ Neal Member #723 [email protected] AIM: MrWesson22 69 Gulfstream Aqua Grande 351C/Toploader 4sp

I was thinking could you use the after market 9" spring perches instead of taking off the one from the 8".The say the fit the 9" or any 3" tube axle. What would my 65 stang 8" be worth to sale it.It seem like it should good for some better good money. What do you guys think.Every dollar in or out counts. Do the 8.8's fit 67's? I know that they(67) are wider but but could they still work. Also how do tell the ranger rears apart? look for one with the six? Thanks Mike

Hey,I was reading that the 8.8 has a offset pionion. So it moves the driveshaft over 2-4 inchs. Will that still work and will it cause any problems. Ron

the pinion is offset to the right, certainly not 4" tho.... seems to me it was 1-2" , not a real problem for your car, can lead to driveshaft rubbing the side of the tunnel if it was lowered. The axles on the those offset 8.8's are longer on the drivers side. Using a passenger side axle on both sides and shortening the left tube of the housing makes it a centered pinion and a couple inches narrower.

Ive got a brother with a 68 cougar I used to own with a 8.8 inch from a late 80's Tbird. I put it in because it had decent gears ( 3.73 with tracloc) and was cheap at $150 from the boneyard plus $40 to have the bolt pattern changed at dutchman motorsports. I replaced the stock 8 incher and I couldnt tell you if the driveshaft would have worked as I also put in a 390/C6 at the same time . Once it was all in I just measured how long it had to be and then found one in the boneyard. Came out of a late model mustang I believe.
