i have a 79 ford f150. the truck is a 2wd with a 460, a C6, and 9 inch. i had a vaccuum leak at the base of the carb so i replaced the carb base gasket and it runs a lot smoother, that problem solved. however, ever since then the motor has been using/burning oil at twice the rate or more than before. before the fix it used to puff a hint of blue smoke at startup and be done. i drive about 150 miles a week and it would burn 1/2 quart a week. it always did this. after the new carb gasket it burns a little over 1 quart a week, it belches a huge cloud at startup, and smokes at every redlight. whats up with that?!!

Is your PCV valve stuck open? By removing your vacuum leak, you also increased your vacuum, maybe it's siphoning oil through the PCV.

I would check the PCV also or maybe with the bad vaccum leak the motor could not pull the oil from the valve guides as easily either? You might need some new valve seals.

will check the pcv if it ever stops raining! wifes 93 taurus was trying to spit out the oil pan rubber gasket, throwing oil. i remembered something about the pcv valve being stuck and causing increased crankcase pressure so i squared the gasket away and replaced the pcv. the truck has never consumed oil like this before the carb base gasket was replaced. if the pcv dont do it i'll have to live with it for a while, 460's arent exactly a budget motor to rebuild. if the guy i bought the truck from wasnt lying about the mileage, then it has over 400k on it now. he said he rebuilt it once (i doubt it). passes the sniffer still though and gets me to work, thats all i care about.

I don't know about you guys....
But if it's smoking when you're stopped and idling, and not when you're moving..sounds suspiciously like valve seals.

But thats just me.
