With a roller cam you must use a steel distributor gear. The one on the reman dist is prob a cast iron gear. All the cam companies sell a steel gear that will work. Later, David Cole

When does one need to use a bronze gear? I thought you needed to use a bronze gear with roller cams? By the way perk, been there, done that. Might as well pull her back apart and replace all the bearings because I thought my motor was okay till I went to install oil restrictors and all the bearings were showing copper [This message has been edited by MrXerox (edited 06-24-2001).]

The steel gear should be used on a street application. It will last. The bronze gear is a race only part for solid roller cams that sacrifices itself to the cam and 500+lb valve spring pressures. The bronze also has some "give" to it. It is softer and can take an inpact without breaking. The steel is much harder, making it last, but it is more brittle and needs to be used with more sane spring pressures. Keep the spring pressure under 350 lbs with a steel gear. The 5.0L HO engines from 85-95 were equipped fromthe factory with a steel gear. The 351W didn't get a roller until almost the end of production. (94 I think). non of the Duraspark equipped 351W had a roller, so no steel gear. Later, David Cole

So, a bronze gear should not be used in a solid roller street application? I hope it can because it was hell putting this gear on my MSD for my 351C
