Hello Ford friends,Would a 302 be a better choice for a mid-12 second bracket racer or do you think a 351w. I have for the past 23 years raced a 302 powerd 64 Falcon Sprint, With some mild mods (Headers,600 holley ) It runs mid 14s Would like to step up a bit . thanks in advance ..CJ..

Welcome to M&M CJ ! Glad to have you with us. The 351 is an easier choice, but will require more work to fit in a Falcon engine bay. I would hesitate making a recomendation until I knew what parts you already had.

Welcome CJ,

"Lincoln Lockers" are good in the dirt, or for demolition derbys.

351, 'cause there's "no replacement for displacement". But it may be cheaper to do it with the skinny motor. Listen to Alex

Good luck,

SteveW

A good set of heads, a decent aluminum intake and a 650 to 700 CFM Holley will put you right in the 300-320 HP rainge with the short block and parts you already have. Low 13's are no sweat with your combo.

The stock heads that came on any SBF are too small for a 302, let alone a 351W. A hopped up 351W with stock heads will make more noise than power. The 351W was considered a "dog" for years before aftermarket heads came out. If you wanted a fast 351, you used a Cleveland...

This is how it was... even though the 351W has a better oiling system, thicker cylinder walls, taller deck (good for stroking), and was widely available (and cheap).

Add a 400ci stroker kit along with a good set of aftermarket heads, and you've got a stormer on your hands! I would install aftermarket heads on any 351W buildup... They are a must!

Good Luck!

I ran a performer rpm intake with a 750 Holley under the stock hood. A drop base air cleaner and it fit fine. We used Edelbrock Performer aluminum heads, and as an added plus they droped the weight back down to the 289's weight, maybe less considering the alum. intake and tube headers. Good luck CJ, this combo will have you solidly in the 12's or even lower depending on traction, tranny, etc.

HEY STEVE, what is the height diff, between the performer and the stock manifold. what i had done was put clay on top of the cleaner, and closed the hood, it smushed the clay down to 3/4 of an in thick, which makes me feel i only have 3/4 of an inch, and that was with the stock intake, edelbrock carb, and the 289 hipo air filter..i would love to put a better manifold on. i went as far as i ordered a tear drop scoop, and am looking for a hood ..thanks steve

The performer rpm intake is about 1.25" taller than a stocker (guessing). You can pick up another 3/4-1" by using a drop base under your airfilter element, still retaining your hi-po cover if you want. Pick up a drop based filter, and just use the bottom. Good luck, it will fit with about 1/2" clearance.
