Well done article Doc,One square inch of 4 row copper/brass radiator per horse power. Or about a 20 X 20" 4 row radiator for 400 h.p. That's the formula the desert off road racers used before aluminum radiators. I've never been able to fit that much radiator in a car or jeep, but it would be the ultimate for cooling. SteveW

Thanks to both Steves . The whole thing was writen quite some time ago and more for restored cars where looking stock is such a big deal. Now with the newer "pinched tube" radiators a heck of a lot more heat can get out of the coolant because it remains in the heat exchange area longer a 15" X 20" 4 row brass radiator will cool about 550 horses if everything else is right. I'm still learning about aluminum.[This message has been edited by Doc (edited 06-19-2001).]

I'm very curious about aluminum since I had so many problems keeping my 289 cool. I tried 3 different radiators. A 3 row, a 4 row and finally a 3 row cross flow from a late model. The last one is the best but will still get too hot if in traffic. If it still gets hot with the new motor I will be looking into a 2 row aluminum.

This is a pretty important artical! I just did some motor work to my sons 289 and with in a week it popped the top hose and wasted a head gasket! As soon as the air temp hit 80f he started having problems and this was something I never took into account! I will when I put his 351 in !!

69mav,Sure don't want to cook a new engine, especially w/ aluminum heads. FWIW, the alum. headed 351w in Mel's '66 runs cool with a 4 row radiator and flex fan, in 100 degree heat. SteveW
