I drove 130 miles to the track and raced for the weekend and then drove a 130 miles back home. Everything was good at this point until I stopped at a traffic light and felt that the car wanted to die at idle. I gave it a bit of gas and turned on to the highway where it stumbled and missed all the way down the highway. I was only a couple of miles away from home so I did manage to make it home safely.

It feels like it's only running on 5 or 6 cylinders. Actually it kind of feels like a couple of wires are on backwards (there not). It's a 306 with new edelbrock rpm heads, Holley 650 DP, MSD billet distributor, MSD 6AL box and MSD wires and coil. Everything is fairly new. The car is basically undriveable. What should I look for? Could the carb all of a sudden act this way? What about the MSD box?

My oil pressure and temp are good- No change there. Also, I can't hear any knocking under the hood. Any ideas. Thanks.

Look for the simple stuff like burnt or loose plug wires. Check the plugs and do a compression or leakdown test to see if any of the cylinders are bad.

I would also look for a vacuum leak, I had this happen to me after a day at the track and it turned out to be a small vacuum leak at the base of the carb. If that checks out I would then start with the rotor, plugs, wires, cap, timing and fuel delivery system. Do you think you may have damaged your timing chain on one of your pulls down the track? Your next item to check would be the carb itself, just a few thoughts to hopefully help you out. Good luck I know you will find the problem and be rolling again very soon .

Id start with a compression check. then a vacuum check. possibly a hose came loose and burned on the headers or even a plug wire. check the oil and water for mixed fluids.also make sure the dist. bolt is tight and didnt come loose. (you never know).

What kind of rocker arm studs do you have. I had similar thing happen when my press in studs started coming loose, had to get it machined for screw in studs... David F.

johnmustang - You hit the nail on the head. Yes, It was indeed the timing chain. It skipped a tooth, Causing some weird timing issues. Thanks once again.
