Hi I have a 65 mustang with a 302 and a 4 speed Toploader Transmission. I would like to know it i go to a T5 when i use the T5 bellhousing will i need a different starter because i am planning on using my original flywheel? Will my starter work with this setup or do i need a diff starter and Flywheel? -Steve------------------ 64 1/2 coupe, 302, Weiand single plane, Holley 750 DP, 4 spd. Toploader, 3.55 gears

What type of 5 speed did you use? You probably had a T-10, right? So maybe thats a different bellhousing? Thanks for your help really appreciate it. -Steve

I have a T5 (part# M7003Z). oh, I also used my old starter. What you will need is an adapter plate (if you reuse your old bellhousing), and a new tranny brace (or you can modify your old one). Use the search button, theres tons of people that have done the swap. Good luck !------------------ '65 GT 302 5 spd "Trust your instinct to the end, though you can render no reason." R.W. You can search this site as well. Search for 'T5 Swap' and 'T5 Conversion'.... and you should find all sorts of information.Like this... https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/008667.html Good Luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220

Also does anyone know if a T5 input shaft is the same as the imput shaft on a topoader(smallblock toploader). I guess its the spline on the imput shaft i'm talking about, where the clutch disk makes contact with. Which pilot bearing should I use? Is the tip of the input shaft the same size on both trans?

Steve, To answer your questions, Yes, the input shaft is the same diameter and spline count (10?) as the SBF toploader. The difference is in the length--the T5 is longer, which means you either need the longer T5 bell (which you are using) or the spacer/adapter plate that fits between the original bell and the T5. The tip of the input shaft is the same for T5, T10 and SBF Toploader, too. The pilot bearing was the same for the T5 and the T10 & toploader. You can either use the standard bronze one or use the roller bearing one. The Bell didn't change between late-65-66 T10 and the late-66 and up toploader. You should be ok with your original fly and starter, although keep them together--early fly with early starter, late fly (with proper imbalance) with late starter--for best results. Make sure to pair the early bell crank style clutch fork with an early style throwout bearing, and later style cable clutch fork with later TO bearing. Good luck with your swap! Enjoy. Daniel
