Is it better to let the car idle in Neutral or Drive while sitting at a stop light or in traffic?
Does it wear the trans down more quick to shift it in and out of drive like that?
Just alittle debate I have going with a few people.

I seem to remember reading about this debate awhile back. if I remember correctly, if it's a stick, then take it out of gear, if it's an auto, leave it in gear.

At idle and in gear, the converter is sliping. While this generates quite a bit of heat, it dosen't hurt the transmission or converter (that's what trans coolers are for). Looooooooong periods of time may start to break down the ATF if anything, shortening your trans service interval.

Just a side note, 25000 miles max in between trans services is recommended. The way we drive , once a year wouldn't hurt

Ron,

It really depends on your cam and converter selection. For instance a stock converter that wants to stall at 1600 rpm coupled with a cam that wants to idle at 1200 rpm. That's a crappy mismatch and it would have to be popped into neutral at every stop. If the car doesn't try to go at a stop, you should leave it in gear. If you have to fight the brake peddle to keep it at a stop, you need a looser converter.

Thanks guys thats kinda what I was thinking.
My car has no problem in gear at idle.I have had cars before where you feel like you need to grab on to the light poll to keep you from inching forward.
My converter 2200-2400rpm and I idle at 750 in gear.

Todd 25,000 miles that would take me about 12 years.
I get mine serviced once a year.

It does no harm at all to pop it into neutral. It will keep your motor from loading up.. Jim at JPT told me to pop it into neutral when I'm street driving my car.Less stress on the convertor. I have alot bigger cam and convertor than you... I idle at 1400 in gear and 1900 in neutral. Been doing this for 7 years with this trans and convertor... Probably just the QUALITY of JPT'S stuff!!!!!

Ol' timers I talk to all say old American autos should be popped into neutral at the stop light. Leaving it in gear is something only newer cars don't mind.
Just passing on the info to confuse you
