I am changing my 66 to a C-4. It is a 4 speed now. I changed the car form a C-4 automatic to a 4 speed a couple of years ago but going back to automatic so my wife can drive the car. She tried to learn to drive the 4 speed but couldn`t.I bought a C -4 from a guy in Texas and when I tried to put my drive shaft in to the rear of C-4 it wouldn't go all the way in. It is real tight and only goes in about half way. This is the same drive shaft from my first C-4 and it worked with the toploader too. Is the yoke different on some C-4 s? Thanks, Tony

Tony I'm not sure but these are two things to look at, see that all the splines are ok.Also is the outer part of the shaft clean that goes into the trans.I have had to buff them up before to them to slid in.

Ron, I looked at the shaft before trying to install the yoke and it looked fine. We even greased it up pretty good with no results. Tony

If this was a rebuilt transmission it is possible the tailhousing bushing needs to have a little more clearance in it. It could also have been damaged when installed.

Manual yokes and auto yokes are different. I believe the spline count is different by 2. The splines won't mesh together.

Erik, there are only two spline counts ont he Mustang trannys, 28 (C-4, SB toploader) and 31 (C-6, FMX, BB Toploader, some SB toploaders)

There are different lengths of the yoke as well.

There is a rubber seal that -sometimes- is still on the splines of the transmission. I'd recommend that you tap on the yoke with a rubber mallet --very-- lightly. See if it'll move in a bit. Otherwise, either remove the extension housing from the trans and see whats going on, or get a shorter yoke...

I don`t know excatly what the years were, but I seem to recall that some of the earlier Mustangs had a smaller tailshaft (25? spline?)

Just wanted to let you guys know that I finally got my driveshaft in.The man I bought the tranny from emailed me and said he put a new tailshaft bushing in and told me to force the joke in. He said after a few in and outs it should get easier to go in and out and it did. Thanks for everyones advice. I`m going to install the C-4 next weekend. Tony
