Today I took my 66 to get it aligned. The guy did a real good job and he even took out the play in my steering wheel which I did have alot.He said there is a bolt on the steering box that you tighten up to take the play out. Just thought I would pass this info along. Tony

Anyone do this themselves? I wonder if just loosening the nut and cranken the screw down a turn or so does it?

I'm about to install some new headers so i have easy access the the steering box.

I used a 11-16 socket with a real long extension to bust the nut loose a little and then put a wrench on it and tighten the screw 1/4 down. Then check your play, you might have to go another 1/4 turn or so. Then hold screw in place with screw driver and tighten the nut with a wrench tight and then put the socket on it and tighten again

Be sure to turn the wheel from lock to lock after each little adjustment. The gears in the box wear more near the center and overtightening can cause the steering to get stuck in the middle of a turn! (been there, done that)

As I recall, this adjustment should be done with the steering wheel off center. In other words, make sure that you have the steering wheel turned some (one revolution should do), THEN, loosen the nut and lightly tighten down the screw/bolt. Then secure the locking nut and carefully give it a test.
If you tighten down the screw/bolt with the wheels straight, then it'll be hard to turn...........

Ryan,

Thanks for the advice, that's exactly what happened to me when I tried to take the slop out. The wheel got really tough to turn. I'll have to try off center.

Thanks,
Nick
