Stupid question...Is there any way you can improve acceleration, say from a stop, using Ford's auto trans using the shifter. In other words, manually shifting the auto...can I improve acceleration?------------------ Gary M.- 1970 Mustang Deluxe SportsRoof (daily driver), 1946 Ford pickup, 1947 Ford pickup, 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Town Vic

It depends on how much engine you have, but you usually get quicker acceleration from holding it in gear longer.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

Short answer is yes.Downside is that it can shorten the life of your tranny. The AODs are particularly well known for letting go due to manual shifting them.

I can't think of a time I dont shift myself.I hate to just put it in drive and go.It's alot more FUN to hold the shifts alittle longer.Just don't go racing in reverse. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs

This is my ultimate fear, on my 66 there does not seem to be a very distinct click into any of the three drive positions. So I seldom manually shift between gears.

Check your shifter bushings and shifter housing. You should have a distinctive click into each gear and it should not travel past neutral into reverse in a straight shot. I'm guessing yours isn't stock!! Mine died at 70k miles and I didn't shift it manually. Everyone I talked to wanted to know if I shifted it manually. What can I say? That was the word on the street.

We put almost 30k HARD street miles on Tony's Carpri and my McClaren hs close to 50k on it now. Both have been manually shifted about a million times. The Capri's trans is still going strong in another Mustang GT since we swapped over to a C-4. Maybe it has something to do with the type F fluid we install in our AOD's that you aren't supposed to use. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Gary, it depends how & where your trans shifts now. When I had a stock 70 Mach 1 years ago, with a 351C 4v & FMX, with the original 3:25 gears,in Drive it would shift 1-2 WOT at 5500 rpm, which was fine, but it would go 2-3 way too early, about 4200, so in that case, shifting manually was much better. However, in my 69 Mach 1, with a 428 CJ, & C6, it shifted both gears right at 5600 rpm, which was perfect for the mild 268H cam I had in that car. As for manually shifting causing early wear, I can`t speak about the AOD. However, my buddy still has the same 351C, FMX 70 Mustang Sportsroof that he bought new. He hasn`t driven it much lately, but he raced the car (stock)all thru the 70`s, always shifting manually. The car has over 160,000 miles on it, & he says that the trans has never been repaired.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd
