I don't have the money to get my headers coated and they look like crap so I'm thinking of painting them for now.

Good, cheap paint (that only comes in black) is BBQ paint. Go to the hardware store.

VHT Flameproof Coating is probably the best header paint I know of. It comes out almost like a powder, and takes around three cans to coat a pair of longtube headers.

I used to use it before getting a coated set.

Good Luck!

VHT is the best I have found. Not too cheap though.
The best cheap stuff I and I use it all of the time is the Bright Beauty 1200 degree stuff. It's like half the cost of VHT.

The best paint I have run across is John Deere muffler black paint. Put it on my headers, you can get it at John Deere dealers. I have put on about 300 miles and it still looks like new, it will smoke the first time it is warmed up though because the paint is made to bake onto mufflers, otherwise it doesn't work well. I initally though it was all going to burn off, but it looks just like the day I painted it. My dad who is a mechanic at John Deere recommended it to me, and he said the muffler usually rust out from the inside before the paint burns off, and it seems to stay on my headers.

VHT FlameProof Coating will renew and extend the life of any surface exposed to extremely high temperatures. This unique coating is a matte finish, ceramic base silicone widely used by the automotive industry on exhaust systems and the aerospace industry for jet engines, re-entry vehicles, the Stealth fighter, B-2 bomber and other high temperature applications. VHT FlameProof Coating will withstand temperatures up to 1500?F (815?C)

Sounds like some serious stuff, should I wear my paint mask when using it? Is flat silver a good color choice? It's $10 from Summit, so not too bad a price

Maybe I'll try some of that John Deere stuff on another car, but does it only come in black?

If you're not worried about the color scheme under your hood and would rather look at it from a radiated heat standpoint, remember:
-- Black radiates heat best.
-- Silver or white will radiates heat the least.

These are the reasons why many folks paint their blocks black (to get rid of block heat) and headers silver or white (to keep the radiated generated in the headers in the headers and keep the radiated heat to a minumim).

Joe, I'd steer away from making my headers black...
