By now most people have ignored my post because they think their flowmasters are the only music they need to hear.I on the other hand like some tunes. I also have a 68 with console and have decided to keep it uncut and original. Which means I am in a bind over how to make my tunes sound good. I decided that the 200 dollar made to fit junk just were not powerful enough or high quality enough and wouldnt look very original either. I decided to buy a regular sony CD player/car radio and fit it in the glove box. Later I will try to buy/fit an original radio in the console as a dummy. my question (to those who have also fitted car stereos in glove boxes) is: Did you use the old glove box liner or just go "commando" and install the radio without the plastic liner attaching it to the metal glove box door? Im not sure If i should cut the back of my glove box liner since the radio doesnt quite fit. what have you guys done? I thought I would go to a hardware store and make some sheet metal brackets and bolt it in that way. what do you think? Much apreciated. Phil PS for those who care I fitted Sony speakers, 6x9s (3 ways) on a home made custom back shelf with a black vinyl trim to match the interior, and 6-1/2 inch 2 ways in custom kick panels from NPD up front. Im not going to use a sub I want it understated and refined. The 6-1/2 inch speakers in the kick panels are a little too deep but the 68 seems to have rectangular holes in the body in just the right spot for the back of the speaker to sit in. ------------------ '68 coupe 289 C code 66 heads, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust

I would just cut out the liner. But leave it in there.Make sure to make a few vent holes for the new unit.So it does not over heat.I think the brackets would work good.Run the wires behind it and out so you dont see any from the front. I helped my brother install his high power system in his 55.Every thing is hidden. He went with a remote control unit in the glove box .So while he's driving he only has to reach for the remote and not in to the glove box. I enjoy music too, just not there yet in my 65.Still enjoy the sound of the motor. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs

Thanks for the advice guys. They dont appear to have the glove box liner for a 68 at NPD. I will probably go without.I too love the sound of the motor but I gotta have some tunes too! You cant drive around town with your foot flat on the mat, I need some tunes for cruising. My unit also has a remote (I chose that deliberatly) So i wont have to reach over there either. Looking forward to seeing your pictures aGreenAgent. I will take some of my own when I get done.

Take the liner out and build yourself a shelf with a back.So you can keep some CD's in there too.

That's a good idea fastymz. If you mount it like I did though, you could do that. If I could get my stupid camera to upload the pics to my computer, I'd show you.

Scoop, I know your car is an "early" car not a 68 or a 67. aGreenAgent is your car a genII like mine? I have a feeling that early glove boxes were a little bigger? I am having big trouble fitting this in even without the liner, I think I have decided to mount it underneath the glove box, but I would still like to see your pictures if possible. Thanks

My car is a 65 but I wouldn't think my glove box would be any bigger then yours. If you go under dash they sale a cover. That way the unit fits into the cover and makes it so you see any wires. We that on my brothers buick. It looks pretty good too.And on my brother inlaws 55 there is no room left after the unit is in there, but it fits. The other thing I did on a different car I had years ago.Is I built a small box that sat on the hump right in front of the shifter.I put the unit in there and two speakers on either side.I painted it to match the inside.I looked real clean and trick too. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 2.26 60'S 14.9 @ 90.86MPH 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8"3.40 TracLoc,Cragar SS,Black Suede. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html

Scoop, What ever system you go with, get one with a remote. That way, you can keep the remote in the center console and you wont have to reach across the car to change stations, channels, or tracks. You maybe able to mount it under the dash or even the seat.------------------ Dustin C "The Mopar Guy!" 56 F-100 Mech. for wifes 69 Mustang coupe 65 Plymouth Barracuda 70 Dodge Swinger

Hell_fish, that is what I have done and I can say it works great. the remote works from outside the car, and it means no reaching over. The install is complete im happy with it under the passenger side dash. I can still use all of the glove box (liner intact).

Many Mustang parts stores offer control heads that retain the stock fit...and you can mount the changer/amp in your trunk. Easy work with no modifying, other than wiring to the trunk!http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCatalog/Audio/am_fm_cassettes.htm http://www.mustangsplus.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MPFMP&Category_Code=radios

OK, so I know some people will hate my choice of speakers. My reasons are varied but its all reverseable. I didnt drill any holes in the dash, the l brackets I made are held up by the bolts that hold the glove box hinges on. I used 1/16 thickness aluminum strip to make brackets. 66project: I stayed away from the made to fit units because I felt that they didnt offer enough power or sound quality for the price and I hate trunk mounted CD changers anyway. I prefer to be able to stop at a red light and change the disc myself or have a passenger do it. anyway here it is - love it or hate it I think it sounds good and didnt cost me the earth. http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang/68mustang.html [This message has been edited by indyphil (edited 04-08-2003).]
