At work, in the pouring rain (of course) I couldn't get my '70 started. Here's what it does: Cranks, catches, but doesn't catch to keep it running, like timing is not quite right. On the way this morn at 5:30 it started easy and ran great for the whole 40 mi trip. But this afternoon it didn't start. It's getting gas, so not a prob. But what would casue it to suddenly "go out of time" and not catch to start? I can get a ride out to the job site (construction) tomorrow at 5:30 am, so any tips tonite is greatly appreciated. TIA.P.S. In case it might matter, it's been pouring rain all day, and the car sat outside while at the construction site for 7 hours. ------------------ Gary M.- 1970 Mustang Deluxe SportsRoof (daily driver), 1946 Ford pickup, 1947 Ford pickup, 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Town Vic

If you think it is out of time then the timing chain has jumped a tooth, this is a common occurance on high milage engines that still have the factory nylon cam gear. Other things that could cause the problem is a bad set of points or wet distributor. Pull the cap and check for condensation on the inside, if it's wet try drying it out and seeeing if it will crank.------------------ Ronnie 69 mach1 351W-4V engineless at the time! 70 Torino GT 351C-4v with a "shaker" Mustangs and More Member #23

If you think there is moisture in your cap or on your coil etc, just spray them liberally with WD-40. It will displace the moisture and you should fire right up if that is in fact your problem. Make sure you don,t have a crack in the cap or the points are not on there way south. check your exposed wiring to make sure you are getting fire from the battery and not shorting out intermittently on a frayed wire. I'm not totally sure it's out of time, but it kind of seems like it. The engine is not the original engine, it's been rebuilt several times, so I'm not sure what kind of timing gear it has. I was thinking maybe the points are screwed up. I'm going to take a feeler gauge with me tomorrow and make sure then gap is right. If your distributor gets moisture in the cap it will act like its out of time.I just blew the muffler apart on my truck like it had a bomb in it the other day when my cap had moisture in it.I've also had a motor act like the timing was way advanced(it was fighting the starter) after washing the engine at a car wash.I would get new wires and cap and rotor.

Sounds like moisture to me. Moisture condenses in the distributor cap and the current makes it to ground instead of the the terminal. Also, if the cap is dirty on the outside, the dirt holds water and shorts out that way. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

Thanks for the replies guys. Well, i went back to the site at 6:30 this morn to try and see what was going on w/ it. I tried the WD-40 in the coil to get rid of moisture. Still nothing...then I replaced the coil (2 mos old from Auto-Zone) with the old Accel Super Stock coil I had on it before (6 years old). It started right up! Thanks to all that replied, I knew I'd get quick and helpful responses here.------------------ Gary M.- 1970 Mustang Deluxe SportsRoof (daily driver), 1946 Ford pickup, 1947 Ford pickup, 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Town Vic
