How do you get those rounded off drain plugs out of the block. Is it even worth doing? I'm changing my water pump and timing cover gasket. So I took the rad, down to be cleaned out.It was full of junk. I flueshed the motor out every way I can think of.Would taking out those drain plugs help to clean out the motor better.Or is it not worth it on an old motor. Both drain plugs are rounded off.So if I get them out what do I put back in?Part two while I have the motor drained should I replace the heater now too.It does not leak, and works good. And in the summer when the car gets alittle hot.If I turn on the heater it helps to cool it off.Good thing I like to be warm. Or should I just remove the heater core, and not even use one?

If they are rounded off, you might as well leave them until you have the engine on an engine stand. Then you'd have to heat the plugs with a torch then quench it with Liquid Wrench. You would do that 3-4 times and then grab it with a healthy pair of vise-grips.A good thing for now is one of those Prestone flush kits, the one you hook a garden hose to. I don't leave them on because they look chinzy, I take them off after I am through. Changing your heater core is up to you. It's not a bad idea, if you're looking for something fun to do... ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

If you do take the plugs out, you can get the new plugs at any good hardware store, or do like I do and replace them with petcocks, like the one at the bottom of your radiator.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

I flushed the motor out with the prestone kit already last spring.I think that helped to plug up my radiator. I'll let the heater core go for now.And I'll leave the plugs on there for now too. Can I just wash out the motor by putting the hose in one water jacket, and let it flush out the other side.Or does that even help?------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 2.26 60'S 14.9 @ 90.86MPH 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8"3.40 TracLoc,Cragar SS,Black Suede. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html

Sure it helps. That's the thing with flushing engines, you get the gunk in suspension. Did you use the Prestone flushing chemical? I think that stuff is impressive. But if your cooling system has a weak link, it'll find it. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

Yes I used the prestone cleaning fluid too. I never did see anything come out.But when I pulled my rad, last week and the over flow tank had what looked like MUD on the bottom of it. And the coolant was real dirty looking. Not oil in just look brown.

My advice is to remove the heater box, replace all gaskets and the heater core. It's a lot easier to do it now and you won't have to mess with it at the last moment. My experience was I rebuilt it all but kept the old heater core because there was nothing wrong with it. The core sat for two years with no coolant in it. When I fired up the engine for the first time, heater core was bad. I had to take it out and change the core anyway.
