I posted a little while ago that my car exploded (it was just radiator fluid flying) in a drive through, and it seems pretty unanimous that it was the thermostat (since we ruled out blown head gasket). But I went back there today, and I had the same problem. The engine temp. gauge went past the highest point and it started to do the same thing but I shut it off before it did what it did last time. I'm thinking that I might need a better radiator, because it only does this when my car idles for 20-25 minutes in the hot sun (there's a LONG line at this drive-thru). As soon as I got out of there I hit the freeway and I could literally watch my temp gauge go down. Any suggestions?

your fan might be inadiquate (sound it out, i dont know how to spell) or not working at all i just learned a new trick today: to check if your fan is working, pop the hood (leave the car running) and turn your a/c on. if the fan isn't turning, somethin's wrong

even simpler, your engine might just need a cooling system flush if all else fails, go buy a really big @$$ hood scoop

Firstly, im jelous that you can make your car run hot. Id be lucky to here, it got down to -15 last night.Since it seems you dont overheat when moving it does seem like a fan/airflow related issue. check that it turns, but also see how far away it is from the radiator. Mine was over 2 inches away, i used a fan spacer and the temp went way down in traffic. A shroud will also help. Check your timing and carb mixture too, if those are out of adjustment it can make for a hot idle.

sounds like an air flow problem. do you have a fan shroud? they really help. also a good t-stat and a fan that pulls a lot of air at idle speed.

A few questions...1. Has it always been overheating? What was the history? 2. Any changes made to the car that caused it to overheat? 3. What temperature thermostat did you install? Did you install it correctly? Erik ------------------ 1966 Ford Mustang 2+2 Mine - Restomod in Progress 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe Dad's - Original Unrestored

To add to Rocks list:4. Did you check the t-stat before installing it. I always drop a new one in a pan of water on the stove. Heat up the water and watch to see it opens. ------------------ My Mustang My next engine

Actually, the scoop really works!! When my '69 still had a 302 and a tiny radiator, it would edge towards thd hot side in traffic. Once I installed the Boss 429 scoop, it ran a lot cooler in traffic, because the heat could escape via the giant hole in the hood...... Once I did the Cleveland swap, and used a 428CJ (with air) radiator, it never gets hot.....

May be your car is trying to tell you that it doesn't like ketchup stains & food crumbs Seriously, check this great Rad+fan combo from HotRod air: http://www.hotrodair.com/pg21a.cfm They sell the fan separately I used to get close to overheat in the summer and now my needle never exceeds 25% of the gauge (190?F) by 100+?F outside!! http://www.hotrodair.com/pg21a.cfm

Wow, thanks for all the help so far. Now to answer questions. Yes, I did test the new thermostat in boiling water, and when I removed the old one I tested it too and it worked also. It's a 160 degree thermostat. I have not made any changes to the car recently. This is the only place it's ever overheated, most likely becasue it's the only place I've ever idled it for more than a stoplight or two. The engine is all stock, everything original, so that will answer any parts/setup questions. And I don't spill ketchup in my car!

I would have to agree with the radiator flushing, and possibly having the radiator rodded out. If cleaning the cooling systems doesn't solve the problem you could be running a little lean at idle, or running to much ignition advance, causing high cylinder temps. Just something else to check.------------------ Ronnie 69 mach1 351W-4V engineless at the time! 70 Torino GT 351C-4v with a "shaker" Mustangs and More Member #23

flush the entire cooling system. when you replaced your thermostat, did you look inside the passage to see if the cooling system was all gunky and possibly rusty? [This message has been edited by Trailer_Trash (edited 01-29-2003).]

Yeah, everything looked fine in there. I'm also reading that a too-high concentration of antifreeze can make it run hot also. I sorta eyeballed it before, I should make sure when I flush it.

Sitting at a drive thur 4 feet or less off another cars bumper for 20 mins your not pulling any air thur the Rad..odds are it will overheat sooner or later..One question you didn't answert is: do you have a fan shroud?<.i> sam

20 minutes at a drive thru? Wow. You have more patience than I do. It would probably be quicker to park, go in and get it "to go". I used to do that at certain fast food places during my lunch break. It was quicker that way than sitting in line at the drive thru.

And no, it's longer to go inside. This happens to be a very very popular place.

And yes, it's usually worth the wait, ask Thumper, he lives near me somewhere and can vouch for the food. And no, I don't have a fan shroud. Interesting. It's probably worth investing in one then isn't it?

That's a matter of opinion. I don't think there is ANY "fast food" worth waiting that long for, especially in a drive thru.
