I been thinking a lot lately about the plans for my 67 coupe after getting good advice in this thread.
https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/009019.html
Currently my car is a c-code 289 bored .030 over and rebuilt to stock. Only mods are long tube headers with 40 series flowmasters. My goal for my car is to run 13's at the track while maintaining streetability so I can still drive it home. My best ET so far at the track has been a 16.9, so it will be awhile before I reach my goal. For right now low 16's is what I'm aiming for. I plan on doing other things before putting some money into the engine. Here is what I have planned.

-Front disc conversion (neccesity especially on the freeway.
-Redo the whole suspension (4 1/2 leaf springs, new upper and lower control arms with poly bushings, 620 coils, manual steering conversion, etc.
- gears 3.73 or 4.11?
- Engine (carb, cam, intake, possibly heads, etc.)
- Transmission (build a strong C4)

I want to get as much out of the stock 2bbl before I buy a 4 bbl carb, cam, intake manifold etc. How does this order sound to you guys? Is there anything I should change? Any thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just my $.02 (and I'm sure others have some as well), but there are a few things I would consider changing. You're right about changing the suspension and braking system first because you don't want to overpower those systems with your engine mods. I especially agree with the disk brake set-up if you use the car daily. I would then start at the rear of the drive train and work forward. Otherwise you will tear those items up if you add a bunch of horsepower and use old trans/rear end systems. I would make a change in your choice of rear gears though. If you intend on driving the car on a regular basis, then don't go any higher than a 3.55 ratio. Otherwise, at freeway speeds you'll be cranking some serious RPM's!! The other item to consider is you mentioned you wanted to be in the 13's, but I don't think you'll get there with some bolt-ons to a 289 C-code (I could be wrong, but I don't see it). You should probably consider a stroker kit (331 or 347) on a good 302 block or even going to a 351W with a nice build of heads, cam, intake/carb, spark upgrade, headers and a .030 bore. Like I said, my 2 cents, but I think this is the route we'll be going with my daughters '66 to get it screaming but stay streetable.

It only takes about 230 hp to break into the 13s(at 3200LBS) so it is certainly doable. However thats not as easy as it sounds with a classic mustang. To meet your goal and have a nice streetable car you can drive everyday you will need some well matched componants.Your chassis mods sound good but when its time to build the engine ask lots of questions.Try to find someone with a similiar combo and copy their recipe. Its great to let someone else make all the mistakes first, its much cheaper

All these guys have gave you good advice.I too think you can get into the high 13's.
I really like the idea that your going to start with the brakes 1st.And then suspension, are you sure you need new A arms maybe they just need new bushings.
And I too would suggest gears in the 3.55 range.
I'd do the rearend and trans, before you add any more power to the motor. When I put a rebuilt trans with a 2400 rpm stall. In my car last spring it really woke up my old motor.
And the 3.40 gears and tracloc was to date the best up grade I've made.To smoking tires are so cool.
And dont forget traction, get the best widest rear tires you can. You'll never see 13's smoking your tires half way down the track.
My 2bbl 351w did ok for almost 2 years. But when I put the 600 holley and a RPM intake on it.WOW what a difference that made. That would be the 1st mod I'd do to your motor.

Just my .02

Hey Ballerz68, (what's your nick name?)

I resto'd my '66 fastback almost to the same list that you did. The way I saw it was, if I would've touched the engine first, I would've lagged and forgot about everything else (ie: suspension, brakes). Here's how I did it and I would highly recommend it.

1. Dynamic C4 street/strip transmission. (I wanted to feel how a race automatic felt like.)
2. SSBC disc brakes w/'74 Maverick MC (really important you upgrade to dual)
3. Steering (inner/outer tie rods, idler, pittman arms)
4. Front springs, upper/lower control arms, upper ball joints, strut rod bushings, shocks
5. Rear Suspension (leafs)
6. New engine (306ci)
7. New 3.55:1 rearend trac-loc

I'm currently done for this year (maybe a few cheap mods and restoration pieces). I have no regrets in how I modded my fastback. Although I bought the car with no body/interior damage, so I didn't have to fuss with repairs and body work.
