Seen these? rpmoverlays.com/
I'm thinking about getting a set for my 'vert. I installed a speedometer/tach, works fine, but the faces of both are slightly scratched up. This way they would look nice again, plus they would match the whitefaced oil/temp/volt gauges I already have in the car. Anybody used these?

Hey Erwin,
You can go with Autometer white face gauges and they'll slip right into the cluster openings and they look fantastic!!! A guy in our club has four '71-'73 cars and he has used those on all four of them, and they look like they came that way from the factory. I highly recommend going this route if you are switching from stock.

Really?? Thanks, Duane, I'm gonna have to look into that, too. Of course, price is an issue too, as always. The overlays are only $20.

I recently put some on a '66- they look really nice except for where I had to cut out for the odometer and high beam indicator. I didn't have very sharp scissors so the edges are a little rough. Be sure and paint your gauges white before putting the overlays on- that way where you cut out only white will show through. I painted the needles while I was at it too- bright orange. The gauges really show up well at night now.

Yes do it, but not to your original gauges. I bought a cluster for my 70 on e-bay for $26 to use as a spare, then my Dad ohmed them out and they were all good. Saw the overlays for $18 and Dad said well if you want them get them, you have that other cluster that is good. So I bought them. Just make sure to scuff the paint on the old gauges before you paint them, and paint them white. I prefer krylon paint. I use it all over on everything and it always holds up looks nice and covers well. Even white. It doesn't run also. Make sure you use a very sharp x-acto knife to cut out the overlays, you will see how they work if you get them and then you will understand. I put them in my car and replaced the bulbs with blue one's in my cluster. I have a blue exterior as well as a blue interior, so they look very cool at night when they light up blue instead of green. I can see them great at night and day, and everybody complements them. So go for it. If you can, try to get a used cluster, and if you have to, put it in your car and test the gauges this way. This way you can keep your originals, because once you paint them, you can't change them back. I also painted the needles while I had them apart with a flouresent red-orange, and the needles also look great. Brandon.

Erwin,
I just got a look at that site, and for the price it seems like a good way to go. Heck, for $20 it's probably worth the try and I may give them a shot. Of course like others have said, it would probably be best to use another set of gauges to try it on.

Thanks, guys. I converted my car from a non-tach cluster to one with a tach, so I still have the original cluster as a backup. I got the tach cluster cheap because of the damage on the face. I'm gonna give the overlays a shot.

Well, it's done! The overlays arrived today and I've already got 'em installed. All it took was a little patience, some white krylon and a set of x-acto knives. I'm very happy with the results, I'm gonna try to post some pics. Thanks again for the advice!

Those look great. My steering column mounted tach and 3 gauge cluster on my tranny hump are all white face... I'd love to go Autometer on my whole setup, but I like the factory stuff too. For $20, I'll probably do this as well. Anyone have a spare set of 69 gauges laying around?

Not bad at all on a 71-73, can't say for other years. very delicate work, taking the gauges apart, especially the gas gauge. Patience and a little common sense are all it takes.
