I'm going to the track tommorrow and I just installed my tach. What rpm's should I shift at? I have a rebuilt bone stock 289 c-code with headers. I heard 4800-5000 rpm is a good shift point. What is a good shift point to shift at without hurting my engine. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like you have a daily driver 289 you don't want to hurt. My advice is to keep it off the track. But if you insist, don't go beyond 4 grand.

When my 302 was in its original configuration I was told 5K MAX, anything above that and you are taking a chance.

Nice meeting you too! My car didnt do too good. Here are my times:1st Run: R/T - .630 60' - 2.684 1/8 ET - 11.500 1/4 ET - 18.181 MPH - 71.37 shifted manually at about 4400rpms and crossed the finish line in 2nd gear at about +/- 4200rpms 2nd Run: R/T - .872 60' - 2.699 1/8 ET - 11.968 1/4 ET - 18.9 MPH - 69.14 shifted manually at about 4600rpms and crossed the finish line in 2nd gear at about +/- 4400rpms I think my butterflies are still not opening all the way. I haven't had time to rebuild the original carb because of school. Hopefully I will get to it soon. Right now I have a replacement 2bbl carb on there my dad bought from Kragen a long time ago, takes like 13 minutes to warm up. The last time I went I pulled a 16.9 with a 78.26 trap speed, and I was already in 3rd gear at the end of the track (didnt even have a tach yet). I dont know why I only used 1st and 2nd gear today and not 3rd. My goal is to hit low 16's with some tuning. I also need new leaf springs(still have the stock ones on) because the car goes really low in the rear off the line. For sure I'm going to go again Presidents Day weekend. BTW, thanks for showing me your engine.

With the motor off have some press the pedal to the floor.Look into the carb and see if it's opening all the way.Is your other carb a 2bbl too? Do you have a lot of wheel spin off the line?Steve's a great guy,and really knows what he's talking about.Next time out see if he'll take a look at your set up for you. Did you get to see Steve's car(Mel's car) run. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 2.26 60'S 14.9 @ 90.86MPH 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8"3.40 TracLoc,Cragar SS,Black Suede. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html

Yea the other carb is the original 2bbl autolite (I need to rebuild it soon), the one I have on there right now is a stock replacement from Kragen. I saw one run of Steve's car with his daughter driving, I think she pulled a 10.66 . It was really impressive seeing the front end lift up a little at take off. He told me he was also running 17's and 18's when they first started running their car at the track. Seeing what it runs now keeps me motivated.

Man you must have high gears in that thing if your only hitting 4400 rpm in second gear going through the traps.I would recommend a gear change if you plan on doing much 1/4 mile racing.A small 4 barrel would go nicely with your headers as well.Adjusting your throttle linkage should be as easy as disconnecting it from the carb and turning it so that it is a little shorter(its like a threaded rod) and retry.

Back in high school, my car had a worn out 289 with a stock Autolite 4bbl on a performer intake, and headers. It saw 5k rpm multiple times EVERY DAY! Those engines will take some abuse. It finally got to where the oil pressure wouldn't even reginster on the gage. When I removed the engine for rebuilding, the bearings were all solid copper with black pits! Just keep it full of oil, and it will fine. Most stock engines that get 'blown up' do so because they are run low on oil, are run into severe detonation, or are grossly overheated. You can run it hard as long as you don't abuse it. After ditching the automatic for a 4-speed and installing a 3.55 rear gear, I thought I had the baddest car on four wheels. Shift it at 5k. Back in the day when mine was equipped like yours, it would quit pulling around there. The addition of a 4bbl gave it a few more hundred rpm. the gears are not good for acceleration, but then it still sounds like you are not getting the most from the motor yet. I think where you are shifting sounds fine to me.The new leaf springs will help you launch a little better. I bought 4 1/2 leaf springs from mustangsplus. They have an extra 1/2 leaf on the front to resist wrapping. They are a nice ride too. 5 leaf would be good too. changing leaf springs can be a BIG pain to do on your own. The front eye bolts can rust in solid. If they have then be prepared to spend some time or money on it - borrow a sawzall, use tungsten carbide blades. good luck and keep us up to date on how it goes!
