will a 351W fit in a 65' coupe (currently has a 289)? I've been getting conflicting info on this one and thought i would ask everyone in the forum. If it will fit, what mods, if any, are necessary?

Welcome to M&M Arizona!

Stuffing a 351W in a '65 is a breeze
Aside from the appropriate accesory brackets for the 9.2" deck block, swap headers is about all you need. You won't get a tall intake manifold and air cleaner under the stock hood. Steve'66 runs a 10 second '66 with one bad a** 408

Welcome to M&M
A 351W fits in a 65 like it should have come with one.

thanks for the welcome. your car looks great. i try to read often, but don't post much b/c still learning fords (recovering chevy guy). Only accessory i have is alternator, so shouldn't be a big deal. Will a holley 1850 on top of a edel performer sit too high for stock hood? Just bought a new hood, go figure. Are the headers that are needed custom to that swap or more general?

As far as the hood clearance dimensions, I'll let the guys who've done the swap answer that one. Hooker and Hedman both offer 351W headers specifically for '64 1/2-'66 Mustangs

Yes that combination will work. You will have a few different motor mount options. And you wont be able to go too tall on your air filter. You could also go the route that I did when squeezing a 351c into a 66, which is to custom build the engine brackets to put the engine just where you want it.

Hi Arizona,
Welcome to Mustangsandmore.com. I would suggest using the Headman headers for this swap. Most folks that have done this swap swear by them. The only conflict you may run into with the headers is the steering if you have power steering. Other wise, it shouldn't be a problem. Check out all the Forum's and have fun. Be forewarned that this site is addictive.

Welcome and heck yes it will fit.
I have the stock 65 motor mounts and they work just fine. The hedmen headers fit good, but if you wont the best hedders go for the hooker hedders they are always made for a65-66 with a 351w.But you need to use the 66 motor mounts.
That maniflod and carb should fit fine. But I've yet to have any hood clearence problems.
Make sure you get and use the 351w alt brackets.Eveything else will work stock rad and hoses ect.
The hedder bolts and spark plugs are alittle tough to get to.Especially if you have fat hands like me.
If you have nay question just ask ME.And what I dont know like wiring a battery in the trunk,I'll ask others. So I look like i know something.

thanks everyone for the posts. this sounds pretty affordable. One last question from a ford rookie....besides the intake manifold, which I know is 351W specific, is there anything else from my 289 that I won't be able to use on a 351W as far as engine goes? I'm mainly concerned with distributor, timing cover, harmonic balancer, flywheel, as I am looking at ordering the PAW 351 kit that doesn't come with these items. Thanks again for all the posts and advice.

You'll need a 351W distributor, the 289/302 won't work.

The first 351w we put in the '66 was a paw kit with edelbrock heads and a comp cam. That engine ended up running 12 flat in the '66. Anyway, the only thing you've missed is the oil pan is also different.

Use Hooker super Comp headers and expect a tight fit between the shock towers. I lift the engine 2" to remove or replace the headers. The current 408w is still the same block with a 4" stroke and Edelbrock Vic Jr heads and intake.

SteveW

Here's a pic of the 408w and how it fits. You can see that it fill all the available space.
