Just goto Wal-Mart and get the round 10qt. It has a large diameter to avoid spills.

I got a 15 or 16 quart from Advance. Nice big drain area. I even use it to catch coolant when draining the radiator.

I used to have trouble remembering to buy kitty litter for the garage. Always had to run to the store after I had a spill. The problem fixed itself when I took in a small cat.

By the way, I think my drain pan is only about 8 quarts. If I was buying a new one I'd go for the widest/flattest one possible. The pan is useless if it doesn't fit under something.

How do you guys take open containers of oil to the collection center? Seems like it'd splash and spill everywhere.

I have a cool container that lays on it's side, you drain the oil into it, then you spin off the funnel which snaps onto the side, cap it and carry it off like a container. It will hold three 5 qt. oil changes in it.

Glad to hear you are taking the old oil to a recycling center. I've seen guys pour it in the gutter drain. But, then again, I used to use it on the farm to pour over fence line weeds. Works....

Our local recycling center takes oil, antifreeze, and surprisingly 'any other chemical' in different tanks.

dubstar, I use a drain pan that was purchased at Pep Boys or Trak Auto on the east coast. It will probably hold about 8 qts. Anything long and wide and low enough to stay under the car when the jack is lowered is okay. Keep in mind that it must be rigid enough to pick up whn full to drain. Think Rubbermaid has something?
As for old oil, I keep empty gallon sized bleach or window-wash fluid bottles for hauling the stuff to the county recycle facilty. Once I had nothing empty and had to refill the quart bottles the new oil came in and that was a drag.
Last tip! I learned this from dear old Dad. Go to a home appliance dealer. They have empty cardboard containers from washers, driers, refrigerators, etc. Cut them wide enough to fit between the wheels and extend from the radiator to the bell housing. These cardboard "drop cloths" will absorb any minute drips or major mistakes. I larned this from Dad, but really saw the importance when I got my own place Charlie

I'm spoiled

We've got a 200 gallon recycling tank at my shop that gets emptied on a schedule. I just dump it in the tank, and the company pays to have it recycled

I took mine to our local speedy oil change place. They told me to just pour it in the oil drain. I did notice on the last jug of antifreeze that I bought that it said to discard it down your sink. Oh well, so much for taking care of the water supply. I'm sure the folks down in Columbus and Eufaula would appreciate that.....

I find that laundry detergent bottles that have one of those drain back spouts works great for a container to bring the old oil somewhere. It has a little hole that drains any oil that gurgles up between the funnel and the spout. My town takes oil and anti-freeze and dumps it in the same tank.

I don,t have to worry about old oil or even doing an oil change, have not done my own for just over 3 years now on any of my vehicles. I have a buddy who works in the Wal-mart auto service dept, he has the oil and I have the salmon . All my vehicles get their oil changed every 3000 miles without fail. The old barter system works great when two people can agree on an equitable trade.

I cut the bottom off of a 55 gallon plastic barrel. It's about 5 inches deep. I haven't had a problem draining trannies into it, oil pans, radiators, etc. Plenty of room and it is low profile, so it slides under the car's easily. It sets perfectly under my engine stand as well when tearing down an engine. Barrels can usually be picked up for free or next to it, and a saws-all will have it whittled down in no time. Plus you can use the remainder as a trash barrel for the garage!

That's a great idea. It would make a good disassembly pan for a tranny, too.
