My Stang is just a daily driver, but I am converting it from a I6 to a V8, and I understand the Cruise-o-Matic is crap. So I was wondering what type of automatic tranny I should buy when I replace it, as the car will not be raced or anything.

Nothing wrong with the Cruise-o-matic or C-4 as a lot of folks call them. A lot of race cars are running C-4 race trannies and are doing just great with them. Just ask Alex! I have never had any major problems with them either.Dave & Terri ------------------ Poison Ivy (Dave's) '65 Fastback Modified 289 4V, C-4, dual exhaust, styled steel wheels, rally pac, A/C '02 Explorer XLT, Black, 3.73:1 limited slip, class III tow package!

Well Dave, I'm not sure about that. Here's a thread on the differences between Cruise-o-matics and C4s ... https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/008449.html

Simon, I will have to take a look at our '65 to be sure, but I'm almost positive it says cruise-o-matic on the auto handle or the center console. That is why I'm thinking the c-o-m and C-4 are one in the same. Dave & Terri

Different tranny's altogether. If you are upgrading from a 6 to an 8, then get a C-4. Yes, the tranny you now have is a wimp compared tothe C-4. If you want a standard 4 speed, then you would need to go through a lot of other changes and money spent to upgrade because of having to add a clutch, etc., etc....Just stick with the old tried and true c-4 for the 289 and 302 V8 Fords.

Be aware there are six cylinder C4s and V8 C4s, you want the V8 C4.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Be sure to remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, and Osborn Reproductions.

Would the V8 C-4 work with my I6? I'd rather put in the new tranny first, then upgrade to the V8, if just only to space out my spending.

It would probably be easier to do the swap all at once, tranny and engine. That way you aren't pulling the engine twice. Buy a c-4 and have it ready to go when you have the money for the 289. If you're married to the idea of a 289 that's fine. Another alternative would be to go to a local wrecking yard and buy a 5.0 with an AOD already together, then go through and rebuild both.

I suppose I could do 5.0, but I'm trying to go with a 100% original thing in my car. I don't want anything to look modified.
