I am wondering if its worth it to shoehorn a 351w into my 66 or look around for a 289/302. I am not looking for max power just a nice v8/AOD combo in a driver. Anybody done the 351 swap without buying expensive headers or cutting the shock towers?

John mine is a low buck conversion.I used hedmen headers from summitt racing they were $99.I would look at the 302 if I was into just having a cruiser.I changed my plugs today it takes me about an hour. And cuts up my hands good too.The extra weight and size from the 351w are worth it if your into more POWER.If not good with good 302.

I would love to have that 302/AOD combo but cash is short so I'll probably rebuild the 302 I have and look for a AOD cheap. The reason I asked about the 351 is because I have a fresh one that has already had screw in studs and guideplates installed with roller rockers (DO castings) offy intake and all. The car is going to be for my wife to drive so I don't want anything outrages just a good cruiser. Did the headmans fit without massaging? Thanks for the replies all!!!

John the headers went right in,did have to a thing to them. They fit better the the stock exhaust manifolds did.You need 351 acc brackets too.Other wise it just gose right in.I did use the shorty headers. If I had that motor ready to go just waiting to be installed,it would be in there asap.

Hey Scoop, do you have any pics of your engine compartment with the wndsor in there? (anyone) I am curious how well it fits or if I want to fit it in there. Did you install the motor with the headers bolted up? How hard is it to get to the plugs?Do you have the part number for those headmans?

John on my photo page there is two ok pictures of the motor.

SummitRacing.com

HED-88660 Ford: 1964-73 351W Mustang, 1 5/8 in. primary tubes, 3 in. collectors, engine swap headers ... $109.95

I installed the hedders with the motor in.I did undo the motor mount on the drivers side and jack the motor up alittle that help alot.
Plugs are alittle bit of work to get to.It takes at least 45min to change them.

Fastymz,
Those are the same headers I used to put the 351 in my 68. Do you have the same problem with some of the bolds not fitting into the holes because the tubes are in the way? Just curious. I had to hammer the tube to get it to fit. I guess you get what you pay for.

SCOOP, Mustangrulz, I also have the same headers on my 68 with the 351. And yes I had the same problem. I took all the bolts back out and did those first, then the others, and it gave me no problems.

I put mine on the motor b4 it was in the car, then dropped in the motor with the headers, tranny, everything, went it fine.

Yes I did too,I put all the bolts in the holes 1st and started the harder ones 1st and I try to run then all down together.
I also sanded the hedders well and painted then with VHT high heat paint. It has held up for over year now.I also took a large flat file and went over the inner flanges to make sure I got a good seal to the heads.
YES you get what you pay for,I'll get the Hooker super comps one day they are only $400.
