Hi everyone,

I just bought a 1968 Mustang Fastback that's in pretty good shape overall. The VIN matches the engine, but the dataplate on the door does not match the car. I would like to know if I got a reasonable deal on the car.

It has a modified 289 that runs really well, but does smoke out of the breathers a little. There is no PCV system in the car, but I'll cover that in another post.

The car has had some rust repair done to the frame, as the front frame rails have had patch panels applied (according to receipts). The frame rails look new to me. The floors are in very good condition as well. I have noticed some rust where the rear leaf spring attaches to the frame (I think that's called the torque box?), but I'm not worried about it popping through the floor.

The driveline itself is in great working order, the car starts and drives great, but there is a vibration around 60mph when I let off the gas (once again, another post). It seems like it may need a driveshaft balance and a new transmission mount.

The suspension has been rebuilt and the car rides nicely.

The interior is in almost perfect condition, except for the headliner, which I am having installed within a week. Everything electronic works on the car, except for the reverse lights and horn. The dash pad has a small area (2") where it has worn away.

I paid $7000 for this car. Does that sound reasonable? This is my first foray into old cars. My last car was a 1995 Impala SS that was highly modified in every way. I just sold that to buy a daily driver and this new toy.

Thanks in advance,

Guhan

I forgot to add that the car has manual drums all around.

Also, the body is straight, the turn signals work in the hood, the driver door is not original and is a little wavy, the quarters look good as does the rear and trunklid, and the interior doesn't leak any water. The driver-side fender also has a little waviness to it.

The rear pan has cut outs for the dual exhaust, and the bumpers are straight, but could use a rechroming. The mirrors and door handles have some pitting, but look okay. I have a receipt stating that all fender aprons were replaced. What the heck is a fender apron?

The car has 52,000 miles on the odometer, but there is no way for me to check if they are original.

Thanks again,
Guhan

I'll just add that usually the numbers on the odometer aren't in a perfectly straight line if its rolled over, they'll be a little crooked(some numbers will be higher or lower than the rest).Good Luck with it.

Hope you got a good deal cause that is what I paid for a 68 that sounds similar. You can check it out at http://www.stephanies-mustang.com/DejaBloo.htm
